Chess

Recently, the players from the McCarthy Chess Club travelled to Oxley High School to play Round 4 of the NSW Country Secondary Schools Knockout Chess Competition for 2024. The winner of this game would proceed to the finals of the first division. This was a repeat of last year's game, where Oxley knocked out McCarthy from the first division competition.

McCarthy was represented by Thomas Errington, Izayah Simmons, Chaise Gwatkin and Jackson Medlock. In addition, a number of the social players accompanied the team to play against the Oxley Chess Club social players.

The representative MCC squad triumphed on the day, winning three games to one. This is now the furthest the representative team has ever progressed since becoming part of this state wide competition five years ago.

The social players also had a great time, with players from both schools honing their chess playing skills. Such games play a big part in player development for both schools.

I would like to thank Oxley High for hosting the team and I wish their team all the best as they continue their journey in second division.

Congratulations to all the players.

The McCarthy Chess Club meets every Friday, second break. Those wishing to play are invited to join the club.
