Once again this year, due to an overwhelming number of students signing up for Netball for our juniors years, we held a Junior Selection Tournament. We had 120 students divided into teams to play an all day round robin event. It was a fun day where students had the opportunity to play a number of competitive matches whilst trying out for our Divisional Squad. A big thank you to all of older students Sabah Tan, Lucinda Corrie, Sasha Rofe and Emily Johnson who did a fantastic job with umpiring and assisting in player selection.
This year we took a team of 71 Students to compete in the Division Cross Country, which was held at Bundoora Park on May 14. Northcote once again had a successful day with many of our students finishing in the top 15 for their age group which then sees them qualifying to compete at the Regionals which is being held at Kilmore on 19th May. We wish them well at Regionals.
Last Thursday we went out to the Darebin sports complex to take part in division school soccer.
We began the day with a comfortable 4-1 win over Reservoir and backed it up by putting in eight against William Ruthven. Unfortunately, we lost 0-2 against a very strong Lalor side, but everyone put in a good effort and fought until the final whistle. This placed us at second in our pool. Lalor went on to win the final, however, so at least we can say we were beaten by the best team.
I can confidently say that we significantly over the course of the day. Our teamwork developed and we were able to better maintain possession as time progressed. Big thanks to our coaches and everyone who helped make the day possible behind the scenes.

On the 16th of May a team of 15 girls went to Darebin international sports centre for intermediate girls soccer, the day started out hard with 2 girls dropping out sick and 2 more injured and another leaving after the first game. But we pushed on. The first game against Lalor was fought hard and the result was not consistent with our efforts, a 0 – 0 draw, but we continued with our second game being the decider for if we go into the finals. We had to beat the score of Lalor against William Ruthven, so we went on field with an attacking line up, and finished the game with a victorious game 17 – 0, Blanca Thomas scoring 12 goals, This score put us onto the finals where we pushed ourselves to the brink in the hot sun and already tired bodies. Georgia Barlow played hard, controlling the midfield, and defending with confident consistency. Sadly the game was lost 0 – 3, but the day overall was a victory. Some more honourable mentions. Matilda Chalker with amazing and aggressive defending, Lex Johnstone with relieving and powerful clearing kicks and passes up the line, Lila Kooloos working in various different positions and a great team energy, and Scarlett Madder who was an exceptional goalie saving upwards of 10 goals. Great job girls, everyone did amazingly.
Real quick recap
1st game Northcote vs Lalor 0 – 0
2nd game Northcote vs Milliam Ruthven 17 – 0
3rd game Northcote vs Thornbury 0 – 3

Senior Basketball Triumphs!
It was a victorious day for Northcote High School Senior Basketball on Friday May 17th! Both the Boys' A and Girls' A teams secured convincing wins, advancing them to the next stage of the interschool tournament in August. Both teams qualified by winning all of their games.
The Boys' B team also had a strong showing, taking home two victories out of their three games. They were a force to be reckoned with and had a good time out there.
Thank you to Mitch Lester who came out and helped coach the teams to success.
Congratulations to all the athletes who competed! Let's keep up the momentum!

Last Friday our senior girls soccer team played at the division soccer tournament at DISC. The team won their first game, against Lalor, 4-1, only conceding due to an unlucky penalty. The second game was another solid 5-0 win against Lalor North and to finish off the day the team beat Thornbury 6-0. The whole team had a very successful day and played very well. Lyla Ross scored 10 goals across the tournament and Emily Togneri and Indigo Rodger were very good in the midfield, setting up many chances. The senior girls soccer team is now off to regionals, hopefully for another successful day!!

On Friday 17 May, the Year 11 and 12 boys soccer team competed in senior division competition. It was a great effort from all of the boys and they showed incredible passion and spirit throughout the day, ending up with two wins and a loss to leave us sitting in third place and just shy of advancing through to the next round. Big thanks to Mr Boyce for coaching and leading the boys all day.
Jack C and Jay R, Year 11
The Year 9/10 boys/mixed intermediate AFL team played an outstanding three games of footy. Without conceding a single point scored against us, it was evident that the team played exceptionally well, demonstrating teamwork and sportsmanship. Throughout the day we played a total of 3 short 20-minute games dominating every contest with our physical and skillful presence around the ground. Despite the wet weather it was overall a great day playing as a school. Many thanks to Harry and Leroy in Year 11 who helped us throughout the day.

Congratulations, this team finished the day on top and now move through to the regionals which is to be played on July 24
On Monday the year 9 and 10 girls headed out to JE Moore park for AFL. The girls had a tough game first up against thornbury and unfortunately got beaten 33-6. Next up they versed Lalor North and with only 10 players on the team we had to quickly rearrange the team. The girls adjusted quickly to the changes and came out on top of a very tough opponent. The last game of the game day was against Lalor and northcote came out firing from the first bounce. The skill level was vastly different compared to the first game and the girls didn’t give away any points in this game. Special mention to Matilda who resembled Harley Reid in her fend offs and kicking 5 goals. Unfortunately we didn’t make it through to the regionals but the afl team is looking strong for the years to come.
Ms Paterson
With over 20 Year 9 and 10 students representing the school we had a great day on Monday. Students played many social games amongst themselves and with other school students whilst waiting for their official games. Students had to play singles and doubles games, score and tally results. Three of our students Neon Hodges, Benjamin Hodkinson and Antony Joseph, volunteered to play for and stay with Lalor and William Ruthven students all day as they were short of players. This meant these three boys actually played and competed against Northcote students.
Our A girls and A mixed teams were very competitive both finishing second. Xinyu (Nichole) Feng of 10N who played as the No 1 girl seed won all her games and stood out as the best female player in the tournament. We came to play and hopefully win. We didn’t but the students gained so much more. Improving their skills, playing in pairs, against and for other schools, scoring, socialising with other schools students and still playing social games and being told to finish up and go home at 2.30pm when the tournament ended.
