Principal's Report

Principal's Message

Strategic Planning

We are in the process of finalising our next Strategic Improvement Plan. Our focus within this plan is as follows:

1.  Student Growth and Attainment:  The school will focus on numeracy for 2024. Our focus on curriculum expertise in this area through our Professional Learning Community (PLC). We will focus on enhancing our whole school processes for collecting and analysing student data to inform teaching and learning programs.

2. School Community Wellbeing: Wellbeing and learning are inextricably linked and research shows that effective, evidence-based wellbeing initiatives and strategies enhance student learning. Student wellbeing will continue to be a focus with "sense of belonging" and "advocacy at school" being key measures for this area.

3. Extra Curricular Opportunities: To foster our strong culture of extra-curricular learning for all students and to broaden opportunities for student success.

Within our next P&C meeting we will discuss these focus areas further. I encourage you to come along to this meeting and contribute to this strategic plan.

The P&C Meeting and AGM will be held on May 27 at 6:00 pm in the school staffroom.

Mother's Day

Thank you all for joining us at the Mother's Day breakfast last Friday. It was so nice to have the opportunity to say thanks to the wonderful mothers of the Boambee Public School community.  We appreciate all that you do, today and every day.

Thank you to all of the staff who helped us cook and set up.

ANZAC Day

Each year I ask some of our families to provide a little bit of detail around the medals their children wore on ANZAC Day. This year Kirsty Wisemen has kindly shared some information about the medals her children wore. Thank you so much for this Kirsty.

Sebastian wore (half) of the medals of his great great uncle, Flight Lieutenant Findlay Urquhart. He served as a bomber from 1940-1945 during the Second World War.

Findlay flew in the Liberator bombers on the plane call sign “Adelaide Fever” and served in areas around Iceland, Greenland, USA/Canada, the UK and the West Indies. His main role while in the air was plotting/navigating and as the bomb aimer. He would lie flat in the nose of the aircraft looking through the bomb aiming device (like sights), directing the pilot until the bombs were released and the bombing photograph was taken. The release of the bombs was carried out on his command. The photograph was the proof that the operation had been completed and successful, which meant the crew could count it towards their total number of operations carried out.

The Liberator crew consisted of a designated tail gunner but Findlay would also at times have to man the tail gun turret. The tail gunner’s duty was to try to shoot down enemy fighter planes that were coming from behind, trying to shoot them. It was a position on the aircraft that he hated but had to do for the survival of himself, his crew and the plane.

Post wartime, Findlay did not talk about the war much. His surviving brother from the

war was the same (only 2 of 3 brothers came home from WWII). When they got together, there would be stories told, almost fondly reminiscing their time in the forces, no bitterness. They were both understanding of the fact they were one of the lucky ones that got to return home.

Cross Country

Well done to all of the students and families who braved the weather at the District Cross Country on May 3. Unfortunately, the day was significantly disrupted by the rain and there are still 3 races to run. Due to the increasing weather issues, limited options and build up of events, these races will be run at Sawtell beach tomorrow morning (May 14). This should be lots of fun for our students.

K-1 Athletics Event

We are holding a fun K-1 Athletics morning this Thursday. Parents are invited to come in and spectate during this event. We look forward to seeing you there!

When: Thursday, 16th May 9:10am - 10:45am

Where: School oval

What to wear: Your child can wear their house colours (class teacher will send this to you) and shoes they can run in.
