Week 4 & 5 in the Kitchen...

"WORLD BEE DAY"

The vital role bees play in global food production

The focus of our sessions in week 5 have revolved around bees.

We all know that bees make honey and we are so very grateful for this. However, the focus of our discussions has been about the fact that bees play a critical role in growing all of our fruits and vegetables. Without them, we simply wouldn't be able to grow produce in our garden. The take home message is to respect and encourage bees in our gardens and be grateful for the role they play in food production.

Since bees were our key focus this week, we of course cooked with HONEY!! Sweet and savoury dishes were on the menu!

The senior classes made Honeycomb, Teriyaki noodles and Roasted Jerusalem Artichokes with lemon and honey. While the junior classes made Honey Joys, Kale Chips  and Teriyaki noodles.

A great menu that is super tasty and demonstrates the ways honey can adapt to bot sweet and savoury dishes.

BEE WEEK

It has been a wonderful week to celebrate the importance of Bees in our world.

We all know that bees produce amazing honey but we also chatted about the important role bees have in our food supply.

Pollen movers - Bees, help to pollinate our fruit and veggie flowers giving us beautiful produce to eat.

For our native solitary bees we made Bee Hotels to put in our garden, encouraging bees to make St As their home. We collected sticks and flowers and created some amazing homes.

Our Year 3/4 planted up our last Autumn seeds and seedlings - Broad Beans, cauliflower and celery. Great effort.

Its also been a great time to visit our school pond, we checked what aquatic macro invertibrate are living in our waters , we cleaned the water, checked ph levels and water temperate, even had time to build some garden art. WE ALSO HEARD A WELCOMING FROG CALL.   EXCITING.

Banana Update - Our amazing banana trees are ladened with  loads of bananas .

More Great weeks in our Autumn kitchen garden.

Happy Gardening
