Learning in Foundation happens in so many different ways. We use art and expression a lot to learn to read and write. We will often use the sounds of the week to inspire our art, as seen here with Edward the Emu, hermit crabs, octopus and tigers. Building skills to follow instructions, break things down into steps and be brave to try new things are all very important elements to learning.
Grade 1
In Gr 1 the children have spent some time revising their addition, place value, number writing and skip counting skills using a variety of games and activities. They are all working very hard on being able to form all of their numbers correctly, without reversals, and writing numbers from 1-120 or greater. They are superstars!
Grade 2
In our Inquiry Unit, 'What do you know about Bendigo?' the Grade 2 students have been learning about how Bendigo's people, culture and landscape have changed over time. This week we began the first part of our four part diorama, showing how Bendigo would have looked before European settlement. We have explored the story of our first nations peoples, including looking at the land, how Indigenous people would have lived and the dreamtime stories from our area.
3/4 Unit
Sovereign Hill Excursion
On Tuesday the 3/4 Unit had an excellent day visiting Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. Our Inquiry Studies have had us exploring our early Australian colonial and gold rush history. Despite some cold weather, our students enjoyed panning for gold, exploring the Red Hill Gold Mine, casting gold ingots, learning about 1850 clothing styles for the workers and the wealthy, making old fashioned lollies and 9 pin bowling.
Exploring the streets of Sovereign Hill gave us a fascinating insight of what life would have been like in the 1850s. Thank you to our parent helpers; Kim, Hamish and Nicole for sharing their day with us and assisting with our groups.
5/6
While undertaking our RE unit on Pentecost, we have been looking at what it means to be a Spirit filled person. Ms Johns class asked, "what do we do to be spirit filled people?". While other classes looked at people in our community who show the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Mr Feeny's class have used their knowledge of 2 and 3 D shapes to recreate beautiful versions of War Horse.
Our unit has also been looking at Australian immigration history. We have been looking at a timeline of immigration and the various cultures that have made their way into our history.
It has been very timely reading our class novels, Black Cockatoo and Dirrarn, as we take part in various National Reconciliation Week activities.
