Abby the Yabby

Prep

We have been discussing Living and Non-Living things, as we welcome our new pet yabby - ‘Abby the Yabby’ (thank you Evelyn from Grade 2 for the name suggestion) into the Science Classroom at Molesworth.

They crafted their own ‘aquariums’ with great success:

Grade 1

We have been learning about external body coverings, sorting animals into different categories such as fur, feather, scales and skin. This week students focused on the two different types of fur when creating their kangaroos. These two types of fur are important in keeping the kangaroo warm and dry, as well as camouflaged. See if you can spot the guard hairs.

Grade 2

We have commenced their animal research projects. Now that students have selected their animal, parents and carers may like to use this as the perfect opportunity to visit the local library with their child for some bonus research time.

Grade 3

We have been learning all about the life cycle of different animals. They used their knowledge to make a flip life cycle of a chosen animal. Here is some of our amazing work.

Grade 4

We have been learning about all things food webs! Students have built food webs in different ecosystems and used their knowledge to construct a food web of our urban environment.

Grade 5

We have been discussing animal adaptations and how different animals use physical, behavioural and physiological traits to survive in their habitats. Students have also started to conceptualise and design their own animal!

Grade 6

We have continued to monitor our plant growth. We are also looking at the bigger picture and unpacking different human impacts that affect the biodiversity and productivity of habitats.
