Writing
We have been looking at figurative language and revisiting the key aspects of writing recounts. To embed our knowledge of figurative language we created our personal figurative language zine. We investigated key figurative language principles such as similes, metaphors , personification, hyperbole, onomatopoeia and many more.
Last week we revisited recounts, by using an important past memory and recounting what happened.
Here is Brooklyn’s recount on getting her first cat Oreo:
“Alright Brooklyn no promises we will find a cat today.” My mum looked me in the eye as I nodded. I sprinted on the hard, concrete floor to the lobby. After a few minutes sitting down on the chair that had cat hair all over it. A lady came to us to sign some verification. While that was happening I sat there staring at the animal toys thinking they were for all living beings not just animals.
Alrighty you’re good to check the cats out! The lady guided us to where the cats were housed. My eyes glanced straight to the kittens “Oh my god!!!” I jumped into the air and it felt like I was in heaven.
My eyes were locked onto one kitten, a small ginger stripped with a blonde. Meanwhile my parents are doting over a small black kitten I was immediately smitten. He chose us, I thought. I take him up in my hands and we leave the cat shelter, everyone is happy. Cut to a year later the little kitten is no more, he is a menace peeing in plants sleeping on heads. But we still love our Oreo…..
Humanities
We have started exploring Geography and broadening our knowledge of the South Pacific and Asia. We started by building our knowledge of our home state Victoria and then Australia by using google maps to locate and identify important natural and human geographic features and place them on an empty map. We are now about to begin our project The Amazing Race where we will investigate 3 different countries from around the world and design an Amazing Race just like the popular reality TV show.
Winter Gala Tryouts
Friday week ago interested year 6’s ventured to the oval and netball court with the goal of representing NMPS in the following sports: AFL, Netball and Tee-Ball.
Kale ran the students through their paces in AFL, working on kicking, handballing and marking drills. Mark ran the rule over those wishing to tryout Tee-Ball.
In netball Hayley with assistance from Ben took the netballers through the necessary skills before playing a scratch match to practice positioning, tactics and overall gameplay.
Well done to all who tried out and demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship and congratulations to the students that were selected and will don the red, blue and white and represent NMPS with pride at the end of term.
