Year 5 News

From Matilda B, Year 5 teacher

Same, same but different

Maths

We have been working on our understanding of 3D shapes and their properties. We practiced making nets on polypad, constructing 3D shapes using classroom materials, and naming them based on their properties – faces, edges, vertices, and angles. We looked at common polygons like prisms and pyramids, and used Greek prefixes to help name uncommon polygons.

Wellbeing

As part of Education Week, we created flags to represent our identities. We each took time to brainstorm what makes us us, including culture and cultural connection, then abstracted or symbolised these values and cultural identities to create a flag. Some classes were lucky enough to have parent visitors who shared their cultural identity with the class.

Cooking

We baked a spiced carrot cake. It was an interesting exercise in how differently four cakes can turn out following the same recipe…! We did some more work on our cooking zines, and learned about the different Aboriginal seasons and what characterises them.

Literacy

We have been unpacking the difference between subjective and objective, and recognising the language that helps us identify an opinion. We have looked at news articles, opinion pieces, and Google reviews, and discussing the role bias can play in how information is presented. Our literature circles are now well underway in reading and we are really enjoying these little book clubs each week!
