Leadership Report

Written by Hayley Mann

Dear Saltwater Community,

Welcome to week Six of Term Two. We are now halfway through the term, and it's a great time to reflect on the wonderful learning and growth we've seen so far. As we move into the second half of the term, we look forward to continuing our rich learning experiences and supporting students to build on their progress.

E-Bikes and E-Scooters

We would like to bring to the attention of our school community some growing concerns regarding the use of e-scooters and e-bikes by students, particularly students based at the Coaching Parade campus.

Over the past couple of weeks, we have received reports of groups of students riding e-bikes along footpaths and through pedestrian crossings immediately after dismissal. Alarmingly, there was an incident where a group of students followed a community member home, which has caused significant concern.

We remind families that under Victorian law, children under the age of 16 are not permitted to ride e-scooters on public roads, footpaths, or shared paths—even with parental supervision. The legal use of e-bikes is also subject to specific power and speed limits, and riders must wear helmets and follow road rules at all times.

To promote safety, we ask all students and families to follow these important guidelines:

  • Students under 16 must not use e-scooters in public spaces.
  • Ensure any e-bikes comply with legal requirements.
  • Always wear an approved helmet when riding any bike or scooter.
  • Ride slowly and respectfully around pedestrians and vehicles.
  • Avoid riding in high-traffic areas during peak times.

We urge families to have conversations at home about these safety expectations and legal requirements. Moving forward, the school will be contacting families who do not follow these expectations. In line with our duty of care, students may be stopped from leaving the school grounds with their bikes and scooters if minimum legal requirements are not met such as not having a helmet.

Thank you to the many families who consistently support a culture of safety and responsibility. We are grateful for your continued partnership in creating a safe and respectful environment for all members of the Saltwater College community.

Education Support Personnel (ESP) Day

ESP Day is celebrated on 16the of May each year, a day to honour and recognise the extraordinary contribution education support staff make to our school and to public education. At Saltwater College, we celebrated ESP Day with a special morning tea to honour and thank our ES staff for their hard work and contribution to our school programs. We are grateful to have our ES working by our side in many varied and important roles.

Preparing for the Cooler Weather

As the cooler weather approaches and the mornings are filled with dew, it is a timely reminder for our students to wear the school uniform jumper, long pants and a jacket, in order to stay warm and dress appropriately for the cooler weather. Staying warm and healthy will help us to maintain regular school attendance. In addition to keeping warm, elevated hygiene practices help to stop the spread of germs. Assisting children to practise washing their hands and sneezing or coughing into their elbows is a useful hygiene measure. Small strategies such as these can assist with reducing the spread of illnesses.

As always, we value the communication from our community about absences and the reasons, as this assist us with our focus on attendance. Remember, attendance matters and everyday counts.

Communication and Social Media at Saltwater

As we publish significant events, accomplishments, and acknowledgements on our social media channels, we extend an invitation to our community to connect by following our social media pages.

A reminder that our newsletter acts as the main form of communication and a bridge between all platforms, with our school website, XUNO notifications, and emails continuing to be our official channels of communication. We love your comments and feedback, and please continue to exercise respect for our school and our community when responding to our posts.

Three Way Students Led Conferences - Thank You

We wish to extend a huge thank you to all our families for attending the Student Led conference day in the last few weeks. We appreciate your support with the scheduling of the day and the requirement of the early dismissal to enable these conferences to operate.

From all accounts, it was a wonderful opportunity for children to present their Semester One learning and achievements to their families, to celebrate their learning, and to strengthen our home school relationships. Student end of Semester One reports will be published to families on Xuno in the last week of Term.

Thank you,

on behalf of the leadership team.
