Year 7-9 - Coaching Parade Campus

Year 7-9 Update

Student Portfolios

Over the past few weeks, students have been working diligently on their portfolios using the new platform, Google Sites. They applied the DEAL method (Describe, Examine, Articulate, Learning Outcomes) to reflect on work they are proud of, highlighting both their achievements and next steps. In the process, they also developed valuable digital skills while creating electronic portfolios they will continue to build on throughout the year.

Three-Way Conferences

Our recent Three-Way Conferences were a wonderful celebration of student learning. Students confidently presented their progress and achievements across all subjects, speaking with pride and enthusiasm. Their ability to reflect and communicate their learning was impressive, and we commend them for their preparation and presentation skills. Thank you to all the families who attended and supported these meaningful conversations. If you weren’t able to attend, we encourage you to have your child present their portfolio at home; students can access it via their Google Drive.

Interschool Sports

On Friday 23rd of May, a number of our Year Nine students had the opportunity to represent our school at the Hobson's Bay Interschool Sports Competition. The girls competed in netball at Altona Sports Centre and showed excellent teamwork and resilience throughout the day, securing an impressive 17-4 win in one of their matches.

The boys competed in soccer down in Williamstown and put on an impressive fight to come third overall for their pool. The boys managed to win one of their games 4-0, whilst coming a draw in two others.

We are incredibly proud of how the students represented the school and can't wait for our Year Seven and Eight students to have further opportunities to compete.

Year 7 Netball

On Tuesday, 28th May, our Year 7 girls represented our school in the inter-school netball competition at Altona Sports Centre. Throughout the day, the team played four games against schools including Altona College, Bayside, and Williamstown.

Our team—consisting of Lexi, Ekam, Ella, Janelle, Adn, Pari, and Tanya—was led by Maya (captain), with Alina and Nadia as vice-captains. While the girls didn’t come away with a victory, they showed fantastic teamwork and resilience in the face of strong competition. The experience was a great opportunity for the girls to support one another and grow as a team.

With more training and preparation, we are confident that we will see even better outcomes in the future. We look forward to our next chance to represent our school at upcoming events.

Cross Country

Congratulations to all of our Saltwater College secondary students who proudly represented our school at the Division Cross Country event held at Cherry Lake. Students demonstrated resilience, determination, and school spirit as they tackled the course, supporting one another and giving their personal best.

A special shout-out goes to those who qualified for the next round, a remarkable achievement that highlights their commitment and perseverance:

  • 13-Year-Old Girls: Nadia Christian (5th), Parivithia Sreenivas (14th)
  • 14-Year-Old Girls: Hasel Hews (1st), Jessica Lin (13th)
  • 14-Year-Old Boys: Rishaan Singh (2nd)
  • 15-Year-Old Boys: Shaurya Verma (14th)

We also celebrate the outstanding efforts of our Junior Girls team, who were named Runners-Up in their category, a true testament to teamwork and dedication.

Well done to all students involved. Your efforts and attitude on the day reflected the values of Saltwater College, and we are incredibly proud of you.

Year 7-9 Challenge - Anything But a Bag!

Our Year Nine students who are part of the fundraising committee are busy at work raising money for their end of year graduation. Their next challenge is for students to bring an alternative for their school bag, with prizes being available for the most creative. We can't wait to see what the students come up with.

Food Technology

Year Nine

For the past three weeks, the Year Nine students have been working hard to compete in The Great Saltwater Bake Off! In groups, students had to create a recipe that involved shortcrust pastry, and then they had two weeks to create and present their dish to a panel of judges. Seeing everyone's creativity and dedication was amazing, and the judges were very impressed with everyone's dishes.

The winning group on Wednesday was Jaynah, Nora and Jye, who created a cookie dough tart with homemade caramel sauce and the winning group from Friday was Ata and Blake, who created an oreo baklava.

Year Eight

The Year Eight students have been exploring a variety of dishes in food technology this semester. As a class we have unpacked a variety of cooking concepts as we strengthen our skillsets. This week the students have been learning how to make fresh pasta with a homemade napoletana sauce. This was lots of fun for us to practise our kneading techniques and learning how to use a pasta machine.

Year Seven

The Year Seven students have been having some fun exploring how to work in a commercial kitchen setting. We have explored how to safely use knives, stoves and ovens when making a variety of dishes like muffins, apple turn overs and tacos.

English

Year Seven

This term, our Year Seven students have been delving into the classic storytelling structure of the Hero’s Journey. They have been mapping out the 12 stages using a planning template, allowing them to understand the journey many fictional characters take. To deepen their understanding, students have also been conducting a novel study of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. As a class, we have been reading the novel aloud, followed by answering comprehension questions to consolidate their understanding of the text. We encourage all students to use Google Classroom to catch up with their Hero’s Journey writing or comprehension questions if they have been away or need extra practise.

Year Eight

This Semester, our Year Eight students have been hard at work analysing The Hunger Games through a unique and creative assessment known as the 'one-pager' project. Designed to challenge students to demonstrate their understanding of key themes, characters, and ideas visually and textually, this task brought out an incredible depth of thought and creativity across all classes.

We are insanely proud of the effort, care, and originality students poured into their work. Each one-pager was a personal and powerful reflection of the novel’s big ideas, combining quotes, symbols, colour, and personal insights in engaging and meaningful ways.

Whether it was a clever interpretation of Katniss’s journey, a symbolic representation of the Capitol’s control, or thoughtful reflections on the theme of survival, students impressed us with their ability to make strong connections and express their ideas with clarity and flair.

The final products are currently on display, and they’re well worth a look — an inspiring reminder of how deeply young readers can engage with literature when given a chance to respond in creative and personal ways.

Well done, Year Eight - we couldn’t be prouder!

Year Nine

This term in Year Nine English, students have been deeply engaged in a novel study of The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Building on their learning from Term One, they are using their knowledge of literary devices and narrative structure to analyse key themes, including identity, justice, and activism. Students have worked both independently and collaboratively to respond to the text.

Each student has created a One-Page Novel Analysis poster, summarising and interpreting key ideas through symbols, quotes, and literary features. These rich visual responses have allowed students to explore how authors use language to influence meaning. They are now working in small groups on a Character Analysis poster, where they examine character development and relationships in greater detail. These posters will soon be displayed in classrooms to showcase their analytical thinking.

In the coming weeks, students will view the film adaptation of The Hate U Give as a way to compare narrative techniques and character portrayal across media. This will help them consolidate their learning across Terms One and Two, and reflect on how literature and film can both shape and reflect social issues. We look forward to sharing more of their work with you soon!
