Year Six

Dear Year Six Community,

We are now officially more than halfway through Term Two and as always we have been BUSY! It was incredibly pleasing to see all students wearing their full academic uniform for school photos, which were taken last week. Year Six students and teachers also proudly and very quickly lined up in height order and in batches our graduation photo was taken, which will be combined to create one large and impressive photo of 260+ students and 12 teachers!

Students conducted their Student-Led Conferences on Wednesday and proudly articulated their learning to their families. Students have excitedly created their portfolios in our new platform of Google Classroom to showcase their learning, development and growth.

Year Six is often very busy and at times challenging but at the same time a hugely rewarding year for both students and teachers. A massive thank you to our students who continue to work hard, follow expectations and put their all into everything they do.

Inquiry

This Wednesday was provocation day, where students were immersed in a number of various scenarios, so that they are well placed to begin working on the new inquiry. Students will be inquiring into the Central Idea of ‘Government systems may support the rights of citizens’ for their third Unit of Inquiry, which will see them explore both local and federal governments. We look forward to hosting Matthew Hilakari, our local Member of Parliament, who will address all Year Six students on Monday 3rd June and answer some of our wonderings thus far.

Literacy

Students have now finished their Historical Narratives and we move into our new literacy focus for this Inquiry, Persuasive texts. Students will be reading and writing about using persuasive devices to influence readers’ opinions. This text type aligns beautifully with our new Inquiry.

Numeracy

Our next concept of Statistics also aligns very closely with our new inquiry.

Winter Inter School Sports

Sports training continues each Thursday morning for all students participating in Winter Sports, with Gala Day coming up on Tuesday 17th June. We have boys and girls teams of netball, hockey, T-Ball, football (AFL) and soccer representing Saltwater College.

Athletics Day

This week has seen Year Six students participate in Athletics Day at Werribee Athletics Track on either Thursday or Friday. Well done to all students exemplifying the Saltwater spirit by having a go at 100m, 200m, 800m, hurdles, high jump, long jump, triple jump, discus and shot put.

Canberra Camp

We wish all students attending Canberra Camp next week (Monday to Friday) a wonderful experience and look forward to hearing all about it upon their return! A huge thank you goes to Mrs Shaneece Kotevski and Mrs Tara Rankin for the incredible amount of time, effort and organisation that goes into an event like this plus the actual running of the camp itself.

Walk for Reconciliation

This week is National Reconciliation Week and this year's theme is inviting all Australians to reflect on our shared histories and work together toward a more inclusive and respectful future. Once again, the Year 5s have organised and led the Walk for Reconciliation, linking with their inquiry unit: “Dreaming Stories have different purposes and can take many forms.” The Year Sixes proudly walked with their Prep buddies today, supporting and helping students to begin to understand what reconciliation is about.

Important upcoming events

2nd – 6th June: AToSS (students will complete the Attitudes to School survey in class)
