Year Three

Dear Year Three Community,
It was wonderful to see all our students looking their absolute best in full school uniform for our annual school photo day. This collective effort created a strong sense of school identity and community spirit that will be beautifully captured in this year's photographs. Thank you to all parents, carers and guardians for your support in ensuring your children were so smartly presented, and to our students for representing our school with such pride and dignity.
Reading:
In our Reading program, students are enhancing their comprehension skills by learning to create and answer Question-Answer Relationship (QAR) questions. This strategy helps them identify whether answers can be found "Right There" in the text, require "Think and Search" skills to connect information from different parts, need them to use "Author and Me" thinking to combine the text with their own knowledge, or are purely "On My Own" questions based on personal experience. By crafting their own QAR questions for peers, students are developing deeper text analysis abilities and becoming more strategic readers who understand how to approach different types of questions with confidence.
Writing:
In Writing, students are immersed in the art of narrative storytelling with a special focus on crafting compelling beginnings that hook their readers from the first sentence. They're experimenting with various techniques—from dialogue and action to questions and vivid descriptions—to create interesting leads that draw readers into their stories. Alongside this, students are developing their unique author voice by incorporating personal style, thoughtful word choices, and authentic expression into their writing. Through peer feedback sessions and guided practice, our young authors are discovering the power of their words and learning how their distinct perspectives can bring stories to life in meaningful ways.
Numeracy:
In Numeracy this week, students have been developing their understanding of telling time on analogue clocks. They've been learning to read hour and minute hands, understand the relationship between the clock face and fractions of an hour, and convert between different time expressions such as "o'clock," "quarter past," "quarter to" and "half past." Through hands-on activities and practical exercises, children are gaining confidence in this essential life skill while reinforcing their knowledge of numbers and measurement concepts.
Unit of Inquiry:
In Unit of Inquiry, students have been exploring patterns found in nature and translating these observations into artistic creations. They've studied the fascinating symmetry of leaves, the spirals in seashells, and the geometric designs in spider webs, then applied these natural inspirations to their own drawings. Using a clear rubric that emphasises observation skills, pattern recognition, and creative interpretation, students are developing both their scientific understanding and artistic abilities. Their nature-inspired artwork showcases how mathematical patterns and natural beauty intertwine all around us.
