Year One

Dear Year One Community,
We can’t believe we’re already halfway through Term 2! It’s been a busy and exciting few weeks in Year One, filled with learning, special events, and memorable moments. Photo Day has come and gone, and our Three-Way Conferences provided a fantastic opportunity for students to proudly share their learning with their families. A big congratulations to all our brave and confident learners who took part, and a heartfelt thank you to families for attending. It was a proud moment to see students reflect on their learning and celebrate their achievements. With more fun and engaging experiences still to come, we’re excited for everything the rest of the term has in store!
Reading
In Reading, we have been developing our comprehension skills. Students have been learning how to differentiate between facts and opinions, retell stories in order, and answer questions about a text to demonstrate their understanding. It’s been wonderful to see students confidently discuss what they’ve read and share their ideas with their peers.
Writing
Recently, we introduced the concept of information reports. Students have begun exploring the purpose and features of this text type, including sections with subheadings, factual statements, and topic-specific vocabulary. We’re excited to see them apply their skills as they begin writing about different community helpers, linking closely to our current Inquiry unit.
Mathematics
In Maths, our focus has been on time and duration. Students have learned to identify units of time (such as minutes, hours, and days) and have discussed different times of day for familiar events. They’ve also begun comparing and ordering everyday activities based on their duration, helping to build their sequencing and time-awareness skills.
Inquiry
In Week 5, we wrapped up our second Unit of Inquiry, “Understanding and respecting others supports us to build positive relationships.” As our action, students participated in two rotations.
Making friendship bracelets – some chose to create a bracelet for themselves, while others made one for a friend. The focus was on sharing materials, taking turns, and enjoying the experience together.
Playing outdoor games – students practised taking turns, working as a team, showing empathy and including others in group play.
These activities gave students the opportunity to build social connections, practise respectful communication, and strengthen the sense of community in Year One.
We also launched our third Unit of Inquiry under the central idea: “Many different occupations contribute to a successful community.” Students kicked off the unit with a fun dress-up day, where they came dressed as their favourite community helper and shared why they chose that role.
We’ve explored the meanings of the words community and occupation, and have begun identifying important roles within our local area.
A highlight was our community walk through Tribeca Village, where we spotted different workplaces and discussed the community helpers who work there. We also welcomed a special guest, Nurse Alison, who spoke to the students about her important role in supporting others. These real-life experiences have made our learning even more meaningful and relevant.
Other Events
This week, students took part in a Reconciliation Walk, coming together to acknowledge the importance of reconciliation and show respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures. It was a thoughtful and respectful moment for our school community.
