Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra at St Virgil’s College

On Tuesday 13 May St Virgil’s College had the pleasure of hosting the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in the Joyce Performing Arts Centre. The orchestra performed a program called ‘More Words and Music’ which highlighted the similarities between storytelling with words and with music.

The conductor and presenter for these performances was Jack Machin, the former Director of Music for St Virgil’s College. The concerts were attended by students from several primary schools including Austin’s Ferry Primary School, Windermere Primary School, and Rosetta Primary School.

The musicians demonstrated their instruments so that the audiences could hear what each individual instrument sounded like and how each instrument family sounded when they played together. The audience favourite for every performance was Gary, the orchestra’s percussionist.

Throughout the day almost 950 students had the opportunity to hear the orchestra. Many of these students had never experienced a live orchestra before and it was a privilege for St Virgil’s College to be part of this experience.

The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra has an upcoming performance in Federation Hall. Bring the whole family along to Australia: One Land, Many Stories!

The performance is suited for students in Grade 5 and above. This is a musical storytelling concert featuring The Kookaburra Who Laughed at the Moon with narrator Gina Rose and other Australian inspired music.

All backed by the full Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra! Adults $35 | kids under 17 $15

Thursday 19 June  at 6pm.
