Head of Junior School

Mrs Jo Messer

This week is Reconciliation Week, a significant time in Australia, that encourages all citizens to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how we can contribute to reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.

At the Junior School, we have celebrated Reconciliation Week through a range of meaningful activities. Students have taken part in classroom discussions about Indigenous history and culture, and in art, all students have each painted a hand which are on display in the library. We also held a special assembly, which was collaboratively put together and run by our two Year 4 SRC boys, Hugh Johns and Gabby Knaj. The boys read the Acknowledgement of Country and they played an informative video about ‘What is Reconciliation’.  Afterwards they engaged all the students asking them what they had learnt about Reconciliation. We had wonderful responses from Prep students through to Year 6. These activities help us understand the importance of reconciliation and remind us of our role in creating a fairer society.

Early Years Mural

I encourage you to visit our Early Years playground, to view our new mural. Thank you to our amazing, creative and talented Art Teacher, Ms Jan Stary, for creating the most incredible forest mural in our Early Years playground! It connects so beautifully with the cubby house and surrounding environment. Ms Stary, your creativity has truly transformed the space into a magical place for our children to explore and enjoy. We are so grateful!

Year 5 and 6 Class Mass

This week our Year 5 and 6 boys participated in a class mass in the Cathedral which was celebrated by Fr Bernard. Our readers, who were fabulous were: Nate Debnam, Silas Young, Lochie Johnstone, Edrwad Hickey, Hugo Helmers, Winston Whittle, Angus Saunder, Sam Houston and Archie Bugg.

Five of our boys also received instruction on how to be an altar server and performed their tasks admirably during the mass. Congratulations and thank you to Liam Hazi, Guy Harris, Chris Xavier, Reuben Schaller and Harrison Siddall.

Fr Beranard’s homily was informing the boys about the season of Easter, the Ascension and the Pentecost (the Feast of the Holy Spirit).

Our next class mass will be hosted by our Year 1 and 2 classes on Wednesday 18 June at 10.00am.

Term Two - Hot Chocolates and Ice Cream Days

Our SRC boys will be selling hot chocolates before school on Mondays and Wednesdays this term for $2.00 each. Ice cream days will remain on Fridays.

Mini Vinnies

Look out in the coming weeks for a Mini Vinnies initiative for the coming winter months!

Winter Sports: Soccer, Hockey and Water Polo have all commenced.

I am looking forward to getting around many of our winter sport games this season to support our boys. It is always a joy to watch our youngest cohort of boys taking the field in soccer, which for some, at the beginning of the season can be quite a daunting experience. With patience, encouragement and consistently turning up, it always amazes me how a child can grow so much in confidence, skills and develop their knowledge of team play over the course of ten (or more) weeks.

Commitment Counts: Show Up for Your Team!

When you sign up for a sports team, you're not just joining for yourself—you’re becoming part of something bigger. Your teammates count on you to be there, to train together, and to give your best effort. Turning up shows respect, builds team spirit, and helps everyone grow stronger together. Let’s honour our commitments, support one another, and make this season one to remember!

Circle of Life

The Circle of Life program was a truly engaging and enriching experience for our Prep, Year 2, Year 4, and Year 6 students. Each session was thoughtfully tailored to be age-appropriate, encouraging curiosity and respectful discussions about growth, development, and relationships. The program supported students’ learning in a safe, supportive environment and encouraged open communication both in the classroom and at home. Thank you to those parents who were able to attend the parent session.

Year 5 and 6 Football Kicks Off!

This week our football season commenced with its first training session of the year. 29 boys from Years 5 and 6 have expressed an interest in playing in the STCPSSA season, held on Fridays, during the school day in Term 3; the Round Robin on Friday 27 June and the Gadomski Cup, in Term 3. On behalf of the boys and SVC, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr Jason Britten (Eden and Sonny, Years 6 and 3) for stepping up to coach the football team this season. His willingness to give his time, energy, and support means so much to the players, their families, and everyone involved.

With the season ahead and some exciting special matches on the horizon, Mr Britten’s leadership will be instrumental in helping the team grow in skill, teamwork, and confidence. We know the players will benefit greatly from his guidance, enthusiasm, and dedication.
