Deputy Principal

Mr Daniel Lapolla

The focus should be on the application, the effort and the intent!!

Far too often we get fixated on the end result and achieving something amazing. During this process we lose sight of what are the key ingredients to be successful. Effort, commitment, asking questions, putting in the extra work, asking for help when needed are all healthy and reasonable ways to achieve a positive outcome. From the boy mentality there can be this perceived risk with having a go. Being fearful of putting your best into something and not getting the result, scared you will make a mistake or being fearful that others may judge. Having the confidence to try your best and have a go is ultimately the answer. What others think should not be our priority. I encourage all of our young men to reflect on their effort as they will know best how well they are applying themselves. The below quote from Pep Guardiola the Manchester City Coach highlights the important of our intent in being successful.

Senior School Exams

All parents of students in Years 10-12 received an Edsmart Communication from myself regarding all thing’s exam related. Exam study guides and timetables were circulated within this document. A reminder that all Year 10s will conclude each morning at 11:30 am at the conclusion of each exam and then proceed home. My communication identified the bus routes provided for travel home. Years 11 and 12 will come to and from school dependent upon their exam timetable. Students should already have organised exam adjustment requirements with Mr Michael Farrell. Wishing our young men, a positive exam experience.

School Spirit and taking advantage of opportunities on offer

We are blessed here at SVC to have such a wide range of experiences of offer both in and out of class time. This is mainly due to the talented and passionate staff who provide such opportunities. I strongly encourage our young men to get involved and try something new. Sometimes our preconceived ideas prevent us from stepping out and experiencing something different. The advantages as listed below are significant, as a parent I encourage conversations at home around getting involved and experiencing something different.

1. Academic and Cognitive Benefits

  • Improved Academic Performance: Students involved in extracurriculars often perform better academically due to improved time management and organisational skills.

  • Enhanced Learning Opportunities: Activities like clubs, competitions, or academic teams deepen understanding in subjects of interest.

2. Social and Emotional Development

  • Stronger Social Connections: Participation fosters friendships and collaboration with peers who share similar interests.

  • Increased Confidence and Self-Esteem: Taking on roles or responsibilities (e.g., leading a project or performing in public) builds confidence.

  • Improved Communication Skills: Events encourage students to speak, listen, and interact effectively in diverse group settings.

3. Life Skills and Personal Growth

  • Leadership Development: Student government, club leadership, or team captain roles promote leadership abilities.
