From the Principal

Mr Jon Franzin

Dear Parents, Students and Friends of St Virgil’s,

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The dates for National Reconciliation Week remain the same each year; 26 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively. St Virgil’s College is committed to reconciliation, and this commitment is reflected in the College’s Strategic Directions. The College has been recognized as a leader for its work in this area especially with regards to the College’s Reconciliation Action Plan which has had widespread community input and ownership. This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme: Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future. Students at both the Junior and Senior campuses engaged in a range of learning experiences as part of National Reconciliation Week.

Student Free Day – Friday June 6

Next week, on Friday June 6 the Junior school and Senior school staff of St Virgil’s College, will undertake a range of professional learning activities including moderation for our senior school teachers. This is done with all TASC teachers from across the state to ensure consistency in teacher judgements. The other significant piece of work is the development of a new College Strategic Plan. Mr. Bob White – former EREA Principal and National EREA Director of Identity & Formation will be our facilitator for the day and will work with all key stakeholders to assist in the formation of our College Strategic Plan. The College Strategic Plan will be an important document setting the direction of our College for the next three years. A Strategic Planning Task force has been established made up of key stakeholders who will discern the data and to formulate the strategic directions for the future. It is anticipated that this document will be finalized and ready for publication prior to the end of the year.

Staffing Update

Mr. Tim Smith, Design & Technology Teacher has advised me of his intention to resign from his position at the end of the term. Mr. Smith’s last day will be Friday 4 July, and we wish him all the very best for the future. Advertising for Mr. Smith’s replacement is underway, and I will advise the College community of his replacement in the near future.
