Principal's Message

At Wembley Primary School, we acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which our school sits, the Woi-wurrung and Boonwurrung people of the South-Eastern Kulin Nation.

We celebrate and respect the oldest continuing culture and recognise the importance of education in truth telling, equity and justice.

We pay our respects to Elders past and present and recognise and value the learning that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, colleagues and community bring into our schools.

Term 2: Week 5-6 Update

We bring this fortnight to a close by acknowledging Reconciliation Week; our classrooms have continued their normal practise of making connections and drawing upon First Nations perspectives within their core curriculum, but have also had a specific focus, exploring the significance of this week. At assembly this Friday, our choir will be holding a special performance - which you are all invited to.

  • In Media Art, grades have been composing a group piece, inspired by Waabiny time (playtime) on SBS. Students watched the animations and learnt about how filmmaking turns still images into moving images. They analysed the images and have created class images.
  • In other Media Art classes, students learnt the names of the animals in local Indigenous languages and discussed the importance of preserving these languages in Australia.
  • Y6 Mentor texts: Analysing images from 'The Rabbits' and the Stolen Generation, making connections with the real world.
  • Y5: Watching, analysing and discussing the documentary, 'The Final Quarter'

If you have visited our main office then you will have already seen two framed posters displayed in our foyer that indicate the inclusive stance that we take at Wembley Primary School; we have a 'You are Welcome Here' artwork from 'Minus 18', a charitable organisation that supports LGBTQIA+ youth, as well as an Acknowledgement of Country from Clothing the Gap. However, we have not yet been able to find anything that represents our inclusive approach to education, from a neurodivergent stand point.

In order to help us solve this, one of our Art teachers, Ruth Branthwaite, has been working with our Diversity and Inclusion captains to create an original piece of artwork. They have taken inspiration from the 'Hidden Disabilities' organisation, who promote the use a sunflower symbol to help people communicate that they have a hidden disability, and that they may need a helping hand, or more time and understanding. The organisation operates under the slogan - 'Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it is not there.'

At Wembley we are very proud to foster our four school values: Empathy, Inclusion, Resilience and Respect.

As a way of showing Inclusion, the Diversity Captains, Art captains and I, are creating a series of posters about Diversity and Inclusion. One of these posters will specifically celebrate “Neurodiversity” - the unique ways in which people's brains work.

We would love to have some of our neurodiverse students come and lend us a hand to create this artwork to highlight their connection to this important work.

If you think that this is something that your child might like to volunteer to help with, please encourage your child to speak to me in Art next week. We can then arrange a time for them to contribute. It can be as simple as them leaving their thumb print as a flower petal.

Our Year 5/6 students participated in the Winter Sports Gala Day last Friday and, once again, represented Wembley Primary School with pride, enthusiasm, and excellent sportsmanship. We are incredibly proud of the way they conducted themselves both on and off the sporting arenas! Three of the teams were successful in progressing to the next round of competition: AFL, Netball and Hockey.

Continuing on from their sporting endeavours, our Year 6 team are pleased to offer the opportunity for students to participate in a student leadership incursion through UPP (Unleashing Personal Potential). The program, entitled “Aspire Higher”, is a full day workshop, facilitated at Wembley by the experienced UPP team. It is engaging, interactive and designed to unite senior students to have a positive and lasting impact in the school community.  The students are today engaging in the following sessions:

  • SESSION 1:THE POWER OF INFLUENCE- What is influence? What difference can I make?
  • SESSION 2: T.E.A.M.S- Team building session with a focus on building synergy, communication and working together.
  • SESSION 3: BATTLE OF THE HOUSES- Action packed challenge in house groups (or class groups).

At the other of the school, as part of their concept on Living Things, the Prep students have welcomed some very special visitors to their classrooms: The Chicks!

Finally, some notes on School Improvement. At School Council last week, we formally tabled our Annual Report to Community, which summarises and details our 2024 School Performance, as well as presenting our 2025 Annual Improvement Plan (AIP). Both of these formal documents are hosted on our school website, and can be accessed by our community - this year, we have also complemented the official Department produced AIP documentation, with a more parent accesible version, see below:

Exciting News from our BER Library

We are thrilled to share that our BER Library has received a much-needed revamp — and it’s all thanks to the incredible efforts of our dedicated Library Parent Volunteer Working Party!

Throughout the week, all classes now have access to this refreshed space, where students can borrow books to enjoy during class time and use the space as a learning area. As a school, we are already working towards the next exciting step: enabling students to take books home to continue their reading journeys beyond the classroom.

The library is also open every Tuesday and Thursday at lunchtime, offering a quiet and welcoming space for students to curl up in a cozy nook with a book or share a story with a friend.

This transformation wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts of our amazing volunteer team, led by the wonderful Samantha Rovis and Adriana Jankulovski, and including Kara Pattison, Eileen Matalan, Karen Wozniak, Dianne King, and Alice Taylor.

A very special thank you goes to two parents who have shown exceptional generosity by donating books to our library: Jennifer North, a parent and valued member of the Stonnington Council, and Kate Brown, Managing Director of Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing. Your support is helping to foster a love of reading in our students and create a space they truly enjoy. If there are any parents or families who have Pre-loved but well-maintained book they no longer need or want, we would love to add them to our library space. Please drop them off at the office or email adriana.jankulovski@education.vic.gov.au to organise a time to drop them off.

Thank you to everyone who has helped bring our library to life — we can’t wait to see it continue to grow!
