Prep Community News

Dear Prep Families,

Happy Week 6! The Prep Team have loved seeing our students continue to grow this term. We are seeing our students show our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Kindness and Growth each day. We are so proud that students are becoming more comfortable in making there way around the school and are continuing so show their independence.

English

Our InitiaLit program has continued to introduce new sounds and letters. We have continued to focus on the letters and and have recently introduce letters c, d, h and e. You can help to support your child at home by asking them to share the sound that c, d, h and e make. You can ask them what sound does ‘computer’, ‘dinosaur’, ‘happy’ and ‘egg’ start with? Here are the new letter friends we have met this week:

We continue incorporate daily reading and writing activities into our lessons each day. We continue to practice reading CVC words and building CVC words using the sounds they have learnt. Please see a list of examples below:

We have begun introducing tricky words into our InitiaLit lessons. These are words that cannot be sounded out using the sounds we have learnt. Below are the tricky words we have been learnt so far. You can help support your child’s learning by asking them what each word is and if they can say a sentence using that word.

This week in our vocabulary lessons we have been reading the story “Lucy Goosey’. The 3 words we have been focusing on from the story were “mysterious”, “search” and “tossed”. Ask your child what these words mean, or if they can act out these words for you!

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning about the equals symbol and have started looking at adding two collections together. You can practice this at home by showing one group of items and ask, “How many?” then add a second group and ask “how many more?”. Then count both groups to find out how many there are altogether. See the example below:

Other Areas

Some other areas of learning that we have been completing each week include Digital Technology and Respectful Relationships. During Digital Technology, our students have been learning about the importance of cyber safety. This week we discussed what online passwords are and about keeping them secure. Ask your child about why it is important to keep passwords sure. In Respectful Relationships this week, our students have been learning about problem solving. We discussed a scenario about going to a picnic and a variety of things went wrong. We used our problem-solving skills to come up with solutions to all the problems that arose. We have continued our history lessons and learning about our family history/cultural backgrounds. This week, we discussed cultural foods. Students enjoyed sharing the cultural foods they eat at home and learning about other student’s cultural foods. It was great to see students learning from each other! Students drew pictures of their cultural food and labelled their drawing. Students had the opportunity to walk around to see each other’s work.

Reminders

Take Home Reading

At Tarneit Rise, we encourage reading each night to practise and develop enjoyment in reading. Each child has an assigned day to change their reading books. Please bring their reading satchel on this day so classroom teachers can check reading journals and assist your child in getting new books. In the reading journal you can record how many nights of reading your child has done. While you are reading, ask your child questions about what they have just read to support comprehension. At the end of each term, certificates will be given to celebrate hitting certain milestones for nights of reading!

With the colder weather starting this Autumn, please ensure that you label all extra clothing that your child brings to school with their name and their class (e.g. PA). This helps us with lost items and ensuring that your child’s items are returned to them. We quite often end up with parents having to repurchase uniforms as the children lose them throughout the day and they cannot be found. If it has a name and class on it, it will easily be returned to the teacher within a few days.

The first bell rings at 8.45 am signalling students to make their way into class and be ready to begin learning at 8.55 am. The school day finishes at 3.10 pm. In Term 1, parents drop off and collect their children from the classroom inside the pod. If your child will be attending Big Childcare after school, they will be collected from their classroom and walked over to the gym.

If you have any further questions, please contact your child’s class teacher for support. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about your child’s learning this week!
