STEM News

Dear fellow scientists,

Our Prep students have been learning how to care for plants at home so they can grow strong and healthy. They explained what plants need to survive and thrive—naming essentials like sunlight, water, soil, and air. It’s been wonderful to see their growing understanding of how to look after living things!

Our Grade 1 students have been busy identifying different types of animal habitats. As habitat detectives, they went on an imaginative journey through the ocean, desert, and rainforest to discover which animals live in each environment. Using their finder’s guide, students marked off the animals they spotted along the way. Watch this video on where plants and animals live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_a68jGhJVc

Grade 2 students are exploring sound through hands-on investigations. They made predictions, tested their ideas with different objects, and shared their results with the class.

Grade 3 students have been learning to demonstrate their understanding of melting and solidifying by creating digital models using Scratch Jr. Working cooperatively in groups, students used coding to show how materials change from solid to liquid and back again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRGcy18fS6Q

Grade 4 students have been developing their science skills by conducting an experiment to investigate absorbency. They made predictions about which materials would absorb the most water, tested their ideas safely, and carefully recorded their findings in a results table. This hands-on investigation helped students practise important skills like observing, measuring, and drawing conclusions. Watch this video on how to demonstrate absorbency using coloured water.https://www.getepic.com/app/read/51951

Grade 5 students are learning about relative sizes by completing a quiz designed to deepen their understanding of why we use models. Through this activity, students explored how models help us represent things that are too big or too small to see easily. Using this website, you can have a look at what stage the moon was in last night. https://www.calendarr.com/australia/moon-today/

Grade 6 students have been developing their science inquiry skills through their engaging Food Science unit. They constructed their own investigable questions and designed experiments to explore them. As part of their investigations, students: constructed testable questions, identified variables, made predictions with reasons, analysed their results and evaluated their experiments.
