Physical Education News

Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome back to another action packed PE Newsletter! We’ve been hard at work getting students ready for our upcoming assessment block and have seen some awesome growth throughout all year levels.

Superstar of the week

Please send in any sporting achievements that your children have achieved this year so that we can share them and celebrate them.

Preps, Grade One and Grade Two

The Preps have completed their Fundamental movement skills assessment and have now started kicking. They have been making sure that their eye is on the ball, stepping next to the ball, back swinging their leg, kick with their laces and make sure that they follow through. This can practiced at home with a ball in an open space or against a wall.

Grade 1s and 2s have also focused on dribbling and kicking. We have seen some great improvement in their ability to stop, change direction and kick a ball towards a target. These skills are crucial in the game of soccer, as well as working on students' spatial awareness for a range of different Invasion Games. Grade  2s have now moved onto the drop punt technique which is the main method of ball movement in AFL.

Grade 3 and Grade 4

Grade 3s and 4s have continued their invasion game unit with a focus on defensive strategies and pressuring the opponent using zonal or 1v1 defence. Students were also asked to advance into empty space and to think about their body positioning when in space to help them receive the ball. We have also explored moving diagonally or straight towards goal to help progress the ball forward.

Grade 5 and Grade 6

The grade 5s have continued with AFL in which we are seeing a great amount of improvement in the skills of handballing and the drop punt. We are heading into a 2-week assessment block of European Handball where we are hoping to see students apply their knowledge of how to create space and defend dangerous space.

The grade 6s have been playing some high-quality European Handball where we have been able to see great improvement in their ability to create space and defend dangerous space. We have had a lot of fun joining in their games and often found ourselves outplayed by their improved game sense. We hope this is reflected in our upcoming assessment for the Invasion Games unit.

Team of the week

Team of the Week is a way to showcase students who are showing the school values in PE across all areas. These students give their best efforts and support other students around them to be the best they can be.
