5/6 Hoop-time
Any students wishing to participate in this years 5/6 Hoop-time competition can register by completing the permission form sent out last week via the QKR app.
This year our Hoop-time competition will be held on Friday the 1st of August at Jubilee Park Stadium.
We are hoping to take as many teams as possible and encourage anyone to get involved no matter how much basketball experience you have previously.
Literacy
We are moving away from our study of ancient Greece into Roman history and the profound influence they had on shaping the Mediterranean world at the time. We will be learning about Julius Caesar and Augustus, the influence of Christianity and the imminent fall of the Roman Empire.
Will will be writing biographies on prominent Australians and sharing our findings with the class. We are looking to improve our researching skills that are going to be a very important skill to have as we move into secondary school.
Maths
It's going to be a bit of a hard slog in the coming weeks as we grapple with Fractions. We will be comparing fractions with the same and different demoninators and how we can add and subtract them. The trick is to be able to see a visual representation in our mind, or at least place them on a number line so we analyse which fraction is bigger or smaller. We will be using plenty of concrete materials when adding and subtracting them, and if you happen to get the two large pizza deal for dinner, talk through what fraction each family member is going to have!
Inquiry
It's been pleasing to see the effort that the students have put into their posters on major events that shaped colonial Australia. We are getting ready to share these with the rest of the class so we can learn off eachother. While the research aspect of this has taken a while with the students finding it difficult to collate information from different sources, it has been an experience that has improved not only research skills, but working collaboratively to achieve a goal.
Wellbeing
In our Respectful Relationships hour, we are practising problem solving and what strategies we can employ to work through difficult scenarios. Sometimes we over-react and lack perspective and we have to have the ability to stand back and reflect on how serious particular problems are and how we should act in these situations. Conversely, we also need to have the skills to deal with serious problems. We will be acting our various scenarios and discussing what worked and how things could have been done differently.
All in all, it's going to continue to be a busy and productive cuple of weeks as we move towards the end of Term Two. I know that you are proud of your children and how they have been able to display resilience as the days get shorter and colder. I know that it is very difficult to wake up and get going when it's dark and miserable outside, but just remember and remind them, that they are only a couple of weeks away from having long sleep ins on their holidays.
All the best, from Ms. Grant, Mr. Keenan and Mr. Taberner
