Literacy

The Prep teaching team has been closely listening to students' reading and are highly impressed with the individual progress each student has demonstrated since the start of the year. We sincerely thank families for their continued support in engaging with both the Boomerang books and the decodable readers at home. Additionally, we have received positive feedback that students are enjoying reading their online decodable texts.

In writing, students have been practicing sentence dictation, for example, “Quin has a red zig zag mat.” They have also composed sentences in response to a class text we read together.

Maths

In Mathematics, our Prep students are working on developing their understanding of number partitioning up to 10. They are learning to identify the parts that make up a whole number—for example, recognising that 4 and 4 are parts that make 8.

Students are also practising how to determine the number needed to complete a set up to 10. For instance:

  • 4 and ___ makes 6
  • 5 and ___ makes 8

These activities are helping students build strong foundational number skills.

We also are introducing numbers to 20 and learning to read, write, count, compare and order numbers from 11-20.

Additionally, students are learning all about measurement and focusing on words such as tall, short, long and the same.

Looking ahead in Mathematics, students will continue to explore numbers up to 20.

Inquiry

As part of our "Great and Small" unit, the Prep students have been learning about Australian animals and their habitats. In particular, we focused on the echidna, exploring interesting facts about this unique species. The students also engaged in a hands-on activity by creating an echidna craft featuring its distinctive spines.

Here is a link to an echidna video.

Wellbeing

During our Wellbeing lessons, students have explored problem solving strategies and they are learning to:

• Recognise the needs and interests of others

• Listen to others’ ideas and recognise that others may see things differently

• Recognise there are many ways to solve conflict

• Identify options when making decisions to meet their needs and the needs of others

• Identify cooperative behaviours in a range of group activities

• Practise individual and group decision making

• Practise solving simple interpersonal problems.

Reminders

Little Learners Online Platform

We encourage families to regularly access the Little Learners online platform to find engaging texts for your child to practise their reading skills. We would love to see increased participation from Prep students using this resource. If you require any assistance with accessing the platform, please do not hesitate to contact us for support.

Daily reading is the most effective way for your child to improve accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.

Satchels

Each child has a take-home reading book in their satchel, which should be practiced daily along with their Boomerang book. Kindly ensure that the satchel, reading book, and Boomerang book are returned to school each day. Additionally, each child has their login details in their Boomerang book, granting them access to Little Learners Decodable Readers online.
