Year 1/2

Literacy
In Literacy students have now finished their persuasive unit. Students practiced forming an opinion about a topic, create arguments for or against and learnt persuasive techniques like repetition and tone. Students have now published their letters to the chairs which we are so proud of, they are very convincing!
Students have explored several persuasive texts, including ‘Hey little ant’ and ‘Earrings’. These mentor texts guided our learning. Students engaged in comprehension strategies like visualising and text response questions.
Students have been practicing their hand-writing daily focussing on a new letter. Students practise the letter formation in different ways, and then return to their books to write.
Students have also been looking at parts of speech, and learning about nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Students read their decodables and made lists of these in their books.
Maths
In Maths we have been exploring how our newfound knowledge of Addition can be applied to real-life examples (e.g. If Jess kicked twelve points in footy and Quinn kicked six, their total score would be eighteen). We have also moved onto the concept of Inverse Operations. The children have been exploring how one number can be added to another number to make a total, but that same number can also be subtracted to return to the original amount. ‘Linus the Minus’ has made an appearance in the classroom, and the children have enjoyed exploring all the different terms that can be used for Subtraction (minus, takeaway, the difference between).
In our Statistics unit we have continued to investigate the process of data collection, and we have been looking at the difference between random data and data that is fixed. The children enjoyed collecting data using a coin toss and comparing how their data sets were different and why. We’ve also been reading and discussing a range of picture books related to data collection, such as ‘The Best Vacation Ever’ by Stuart J. Murphy.
Humanities
We have been working SO hard on our Humanities projects, using recycled materials to create special places in Moriac. Students have identified the features of their chosen place and can describe why it is an important place in the Moriac Community. It has been a wonderful team building project, we have loved watching everyone cooperate and work together.
Keep an eye out on Seesaw, students will be uploading videos about their projects! We are so impressed with the end results, well done 1/2s!
