STEM Week
Monday 19 May to Friday 23 May
Last week we celebrated STEM Week, with a focus on why we love Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths!
Throughout the week students visited a specially STEM themed Hi-5 Shop to trade in their Hi-5 cards for Lego, board games, science kits and more. Students were also asked to estimate how many pompoms were in a jar, and each class had a competition to find out who their class maths champion is. On top of that all students were given the challenge of completing as many Mathletics Challenges during the week as they could, with the student with the most points at the end of the week getting a special prize at assembly.
Wednesday was a special treat when parents joined us in the classroom to perform science experiments. We hope they had as much fun as we did!
On Friday, insert name from The Maths Show, visited Albanvale to stun our students (and teachers) with maths facts and magic. If your child is in Prep, grade 1 or 2, ask them if they can show you their magic trick to work out their nine times table.
All of this culminated in a special STEM assembly on Friday, where our class maths finalists pitted themselves against each other to get our year level champions.
Meshach Sipiliano-Ernesto was one off in his estimation for the pom pom jar! It was a great effort for three students to get within two pom poms of the correct answer, and a worry for Mr Ibrahim over how he was going to split the Lego prize amongst them.
Our Mathletics Competition winners were awarded for each year level:
Prep: Mehar Johal
1/2: Harjan Johal
3/4: Aaron Ha
5/6: Yonael Mebrhtu
The absolute highlight for everyone was seeing our maths class champions face off against each other.
In Prep, Mehar, Oscar and Vincent went head to head, with Oscar coming out victorious.
The Grade 1/2 competition was a tight affair, going into overtime 3 times before getting a clear winner between, insert name, Danny, insert name and Joey. Congratulations to Danny for eventually coming out in front.
Grade 3/4 was a similarly tight competition between insert name x 3 and Iden. Congratulations to Iden on his win.
Winnie, Ekamjot, Logan and Liam were in another close contest for the Grade 5/6s. Well done Liam, who came out on top.
All the students involved showed not only their maths excellence in this competition, but also great courage getting up in front of the school to demonstrate that. Equal to that was the respect and support shown by all students to their classmates.
