Learning News - Term 1, Weeks 3-4

K/1

In Religion, we have been learning about Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent. We are exploring what these special times mean for Christians and how Lent is a time to grow closer to God through prayer, kindness and making good choices.

In our classroom, we are creating a special prayer space where we can sit quietly, talk to God and reflect. Students are learning to identify important objects in our prayer space and the church, such as the cross, Bible and prayer cloth, and to understand why these items are meaningful. We are practising respectful behaviour in this space and learning simple prayers we can say together!

Year 2/3

Learning about Australia!

This term, Year 2/3 is becoming geographers as we explore the amazing continent of Australia!

We are learning about the different parts of our country, including the six states and two main territories:

  • States: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania.

  • Territories: The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and the Northern Territory (NT).

We are also investigating Australia's unique climate zones, which explain why the weather is different across the country:

  • Tropical Zone (North): Hot and wet, with a distinct wet season and dry season.

  • Grasslands and Desert Zone (Centre): Very hot and dry, with little rain.

  • Temperate Zone (South): Mild temperatures with four distinct seasons.

These different climates are home to fascinating Australian animals!

  • In the hot, dry Desert areas, we find animals like the Red Kangaroo and the Thorny Devil lizard.

  • The warm, wet Tropical north is home to the Saltwater Crocodile and the Cassowary.

  • The milder, Temperate zones are where we see Koalas, Wombats, and Tasmanian Devils (in Tasmania!).

We'll be looking closely at maps and pictures to understand how climate affects where people and animals live!

Year 4

During Religious Education this term we have been learning about living God's Law of Love and how this helps us to live in relationship with God and one another. This understanding has informed our learning for this week, as we turn our focus to Lent. We received a Cross of Ash on our foreheads at Ash Wednesday Mass and have reflected on how during the Liturgical Season of Lent we can engage in prayer, fasting and almsgiving in preparation for Easter.

Year 5/6

This week Year 5 and 6 have begun their learning journey about Lent, exploring the three pillars of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We began our preparations, with Shrove Tuesday, enjoying some yummy pancakes together. To mark the start of the season, we transformed our classroom prayer table with the colour purple, which symbolises penance and preparation for Easter.

Also added to our prayer table, is our Project Compassion box, as a class we will donate money to help unite against poverty during this time. This is our opportunity to help others as part of our almsgiving effort.
