Year 6 LSV Excursion

On Thursday, 19 February, the Year Six students went on a whole-grade excursion to Seaford Beach to learn important information about swimming safely. One of the activities focused on what to do in a boat crash. During this session, we learnt how to put on a life jacket and why it is important to stay together so helicopters have a better chance of seeing us.

Another activity taught us how to ride a boogie board and how it floats because it is made of foam. We were also shown how a boogie board can be used as a safety device to save people who are being carried away by the water. After that, we discovered the meaning of common danger signs found around beaches.

We then explored what a rip current is and how to escape if we are ever caught in one. In addition, we learnt about DRSABCD, which stands for Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR and Defibrillation. We learnt how to attach a defibrillator and how to use it correctly. Later, we discussed which everyday items could be used as flotation devices and how to use them effectively in the water. Lastly, we learnt how to use a rescue tube to help someone in trouble.

Overall, it was an enjoyable excursion with valuable lessons. I am sure the tips we learnt will help us in the future.

On Thursday the 19th of February me and my grade went to seaford beach. We took a bus that took us about 30 minutes to get there, when we got there we got to eat then we split into groups and started our activities. There were five groups and each had a different activity.

The first activity I did was learning about what to do when on a boat. We got to go in the water with life jackets on and played some games to help us be aware of what to do if a boat crashed.I thought it was really cool but the water was really cold.

Our second activity was by far my favourite we got to do… BOOGIE BOARDING!!! It was really cool, the waves were really good, though the water was cold I  didn’t really care since it was so fun the coldness didn’t bother me at all. But what I found really interesting  was you can save people from drowning with a boogie board.

Our third activity was on land which I was so happy about, we got our towels and sat down. We learnt about the signs around the beach and to listen to what is said. We also learnt about what to do if we got caught in a rip, it was really interesting because I didn’t really know what a rip was.

Our fourth activity was on land again as well, this time we learnt about what to do when someone needs CPR. We learnt a really long acronym called DRSABCD which is basically outlining what to do when doing CPR, it was really fun because we made a big pile of sand which was our patient and had to do compressions on it. A fun way we learnt to remember how many compressions to do was baby shark.

Our fifth and  final activity was in the water again. This time we had to save our partners with everyday items, it was really cool because I didn’t know that most everyday items could save someone.

In the end I really enjoyed it and I would definitely go back.

On the 19th of February we went to Seaford Beach. In our group, group 3, we learned about the signs and what to do when you get in a rip current. Next we learned what to do when you see someone on the sand and how to do CPR. Then we finally got to go in the water, but it was freezing cold. We learnt that you can save someone with a helmet, a football, a pool noodle and a paddle board. Afterwards, they taught us how to rescue someone with a life/rescue tube. Later we formed into a donut, that's what you do when you get stuck in the ocean in a group. Lastly, they taught us how to use a boogie board! That was my favourite activity.

Today our class went on a beach safety trip to Seaford Beach to learn how to stay safe and help others in danger. When we arrived, the lifeguards taught us about rip currents and showed us how they can pull swimmers away from shore. We even made a “human rip current” to understand how rescues work, and I got to be the lifeguard!Next, we learned CPR and practised chest compressions. We also learned what to do if someone is unconscious. Then we went into the water to practise rescue skills using floaties and a lifetube, making sure to keep ourselves safe while helping others.Later, we went bodyboarding in the big waves, which was exciting and a little scary. After a fantastic day, we packed up and took the bus back to school. It was an unforgettable experience!
