Around The Primary

Dear Families

It has been a joy to see how quickly the students have settled back into their routines and reconnected with the rhythms of school life. There is a wonderful sense of energy across the Primary school as classrooms come alive with learning, friendships are renewed and the year begins to take shape.

As parents and caregivers, you can support your child/ren to have a calm, happy, and successful term at school by ensuring they:

  • arrive at school on time, ready for a calm transition to the school day
  • have a consistently good night’s sleep
  • are not over scheduled after school – leaving enough time for them to relax, do their reading homework, and participate in unstructured and active play
  • have limited technology after school
  • enjoy some quality family time

It was wonderful to see so many families represented at our Parent Information Sessions this week. The key information shared by teachers will be available on SEQTA Engage next week.  Class overviews were sent home last week to keep families well informed too.

Important information is also clearly communicated through and our weekly Newsletter and this is a central channel to receive College updates, key dates, and other relevant information for the week ahead.

Our Years 4 to 6 students have enjoyed taking part in swimming lessons at Claremont Pool and Cottesloe Beach. After-school swimming training for students in Years 3 to 6 commences on Tuesday 17 February in the College pool. This will be under the direction of Mr Williams and qualified coaches.

Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and this marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. Students will participate in a prayer liturgy in their classrooms and ashes will be distributed. These prayerful times are an important part of being part of our Catholic community and celebrating that we are all part of God's family.

I look forward to seeing many families at the Primary Picnic tomorrow.

Kind regards

Project Compassion

Next Wednesday, 18 February, is Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of the Lenten season. During this special time, we will be raising funds for Project Compassion to support communities in need.

Students will learn about Sisilia from Tanzania, Monoranjon from Bangladesh, Manaini from Fiji and also find out the various ways Caritas Australia is supporting communities, including Emergency Response work in Gaza.

Throughout Lent students will be encouraged to ask God to help people to unite against poverty, work for fairness and care for the world. They will be reminded to be kind and to build a world where everyone belongs and can live in peace.

During special visits to the Chapel students will spend time reflecting on good things they can do for others, and they will write their kindness reflections.

It is hoped students will collect coins and bring them to school for Project Compassion. At the end of each week during Lent, class donations will be tallied, and coins deposited into a wishing well. We are looking forward to filling our wishing well with donations.

To achieve our goal, we need families help to collect any loose change. All families are encouraged to get involved and support our fundraising project.

Let’s all work together to support communities and to fund life-changing programs to create lasting and sustainable change.

NAPLAN

Preparations have begun for the National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy, which will take place in Weeks 6 and 7 this term. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be assessed in the areas of Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy.

In the coming weeks, Years 3 and 5 classroom teachers will be spending time with students teaching them how to navigate the screen for the Online assessment platform.

We endeavour to make the assessment experience one that simply becomes part of the students’ day, where the environment is calm and well-managed. We encourage the students to approach the assessments with a positive mindset and to try their best.

Frozen Fridays Years 1-6

As you are aware, Chartwells is our new food service provider in the canteen.  Primary families will be able to place their lunch order online using the Flexischools ordering and payment system (see details below).

As the canteen is now completely cashless Primary students will not be able to purchase treats at lunch time from the Canteen.  This term, we are going to trial ‘Frozen Friday’ in the Primary school.

Each Friday, Years 1-6 students will have the opportunity to purchase a ‘super dooper’ (no sugar) icy pole.  The students can bring a gold coin to school on Fridays to purchase this treat.  This is completely optional.  All proceeds from the sales will be donated to Project Compassion.  Students will not be given change, please only supply them with a $1.00 coin.

Our Year 6 Leaders are very excited to be running this initiative.  On Fridays, they will be setting up a stall near the library for the younger students and in the Primary Amphitheatre for Years 4-6.  Frozen Friday will commence on Friday, 20 February.

School Transitions: Supporting Your Child Through Change

Starting school for the first time, moving up a year level, or entering secondary school can be an exciting milestone for both children and parents. These transitions signal growth, new opportunities, and the next step in your child’s learning journey.

However, it’s important to remember that transitioning to a new school environment is not a single event—it’s an ongoing process. Even after the first day, students may continue to adjust emotionally, socially, and academically. At different stages, they may experience stressors that present as worry, frustration, or changes in behaviour. These reactions are normal, but without support, they can make settling in more challenging.

At John XXIII College, we recognise the significance of school transitions and are committed to supporting families every step of the way. As a SchoolTV partner school, we provide parents with access to an extensive range of wellbeing resources designed to strengthen the home–school partnership and promote positive wellbeing for all students.

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will find practical strategies to help children build confidence, manage uncertainty, and reduce stress and anxiety during transition periods. These resources aim to equip families with tools to create a smooth and supportive start to the new school year.
