It’s hard to believe we are almost halfway through Term 1!
In Literacy, students have begun reading their novels in Literacy Circle groups and are confidently completing the roles introduced in the first few weeks of school. During Text Study, students are exploring narrative voice, creative language choices and persuasive texts through our class novel, Blueback by Tim Winton.
In Maths, we are reviewing addition and subtraction with a strong focus on using concrete materials to embed understanding. Students are building their proficiency across the key areas of Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning, particularly when working with regrouping and trading.
In Design Technologies, students are developing coding and problem-solving skills through creative tasks using Turtle Graphics. They begin by writing simple algorithms to draw shapes, before exploring repeat instructions to create efficient geometric patterns. As their skills grow, they enhance their designs with colour, layering and formatted text for greater visual impact. Students use loops, pen control and custom commands to produce refined and engaging designs. The unit culminates in a final project where students code a functional community sign that clearly communicates a message. Throughout the process, they test, revise and reflect on their code to ensure it meets the design goals.
In Geography, students are studying the continent of Asia. They are learning about the location of countries and key geographical features, as well as investigating the diverse lifestyles of people across various Asian nations. Students explore differences in population, employment and ways of life, and complete an independent research project on a country of their choice.
All Year 5 and 6 students have also begun practising in their teams for the upcoming Interschool Sports, which will be held towards the end of term.
It’s shaping up to be a busy and exciting term ahead!
