Year 5/6 Cluster News
HOME INQUIRY:
Inquiry: Please have conversations with your child about different strategies they can use when they are struggling with different events in their lives.
Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.
Mathematics: Working on general multiplication skills with the goal for automaticity of the facts up to x12
Chat Academy:
On Monday 2nd March and Friday 6th March, Year 5 and 6 students will have two incursions run by the Chat Academy focusing on Growth and Development topics. These will be facilitated in year level groups.
Please refer to the parent communication you received via TASS for more detailed information about the session content.
Please have conversations with your child around these topics before week 6 so they have some prior knowledge, and they are able to engage positively with the sessions. If you have any questions or would like to talk further about this, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
Camp: Camp will be held on Monday 30th March - Wednesday 1st April (Week 10) at Woodhouse Adventure Park. If you are a parent who would like to volunteer, please let us know via email ASAP.
Please use the following link to register your child for camp as soon as possible. This will include medical and dietary requirements.

Toddle: If you do not have access to Toddle, please contact the front office.
iPads: Please ensure your child has working headphones and a keyboard. The iPad keyboard will be important in the development of keyboard typing skills which will be part of their class learning. The headphones will be regularly used in class for a variety of purposes. Please check the connection of the headphones with the iPad as newer versions of iPads have a different connection point.
Uniform:
Please ensure your child is in correct school uniform, which includes correct formal shoes on Monday and Wednesday and no additional jewellery. Please refer to the Uniform Guidelines located on the school’s website. There have been students wearing incorrect uniform, including socks and shoes and it would be appreciated if these could be rectified. (https://www.goldengrove.sa.edu.au/school-life/uniform/ )
Monday and Wednesday: Formal
Tuesday and Thursday: PE
Friday: PE or formal (student choice)
Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop:
In Writer’s Workshop, students will be exploring persuasive writing by clearly stating an opinion and supporting it with strong arguments and evidence. They will focus on effective structure, including engaging introductions, organised body paragraphs, and strong conclusions.
In Reader’s Workshop, students will analyse persuasive texts to identify techniques such as emotive language, rhetorical questions, modality, and the use of facts and examples, considering how these influence an audience.
Mathematics: Students have been working on solving division problems this week, focusing on accurately following formal written algorithms. They have been encouraged to apply a variety of strategies to support their understanding, including using place value knowledge, partitioning numbers, repeated subtraction, and checking their answers with multiplication. We have also been discussing the importance of explaining our thinking to demonstrate a deep understanding of the process, rather than simply finding the correct answer.
Inquiry: In our ‘Who We Are’ Unit of Inquiry - ‘Changes people experience at different stages of their lives affect who they are’, we are continuing to explore strategies for managing change and transitions in our life, and how we can make positive, helpful choices when navigating these.
Blessings for the week ahead,
