Wellbeing Update – Term 1/Week 5 2026

In the words of Bon Jovi, "we’re halfway there" - at least for the term! It’s hard to believe how quickly the weeks are flying by.

 

In this week’s Wellbeing Update, you’ll find important information for our Year 6 families regarding 2027 secondary school options. This is an exciting time, and we encourage families to begin exploring what the next chapter may look like. We also strongly recommend that our Year 4 and Year 5 families, if time permits, take the opportunity to visit some of our local secondary schools. Even an informal visit or open evening can help your child start to build familiarity and confidence about the transition to high school. 

 

One of the best parts of my wellbeing role is spending time in the yard at recess, lunchtime, and before school. I continue to be inspired by the everyday kindness shown by our students. Whether it’s older students supporting younger peers, children inviting others to join in games, or students looking out for someone who may be feeling left out or unsure of what to play at the buddy bench. The care and compassion our students demonstrate consistently are something we can all be proud of.

Peer Mediators – What do they do at Fyans Park PS?

 

Peer Mediation is a role assigned to the Year 6 students. The Peer Mediators walk around the yard helping students who have are having a problem and/or are upset, so we help to solve the problem. We were all trained by the Year 5/6 teachers. The traits you need to be an awesome mediator is to be neutral, good at problem solving, caring and kind. If students are displaying our school values - respect, responsibility and resilience, mediators may give out House points. 

 

We were trained with the 6 steps of Peer Mediation which are:

 

    1.   Agree to meditate 

    2.   Gather point of view 

    3.   Focus on interest 

    4.   Discuss a solution 

    5.   Evaluate options 

    6.   Create an agreement.

 

We walk around the school yard wearing ‘high vis’ vests and red hats. We also have clipboards with problem solving ideas. Each day a new pair of mediators will go outside during lunch and help students. We have many strategies to help students when needed.

 

Peer Mediators carry around a tool called the ‘wheel of choice’ which shows them more strategies to help calm children down and come up with a solution. Some choices on the wheel of choice include getting help from an adult, asking them to take responsibility and apologise, give a bug a wish, ask how the mediators can help, brainstorm a solution, use an I feel statement, decide to let it go, make a deal, cool off then come back to the wheel and share your story again but calmer.
