The “C” in ERIC: Courage is Choosing Bravery Over Comfort
Courage isn’t just about big heroic acts, it’s in the everyday moments when teens choose to speak up, try something new, own a mistake or be themselves. In high school, courage is what helps students face fears, bounce back from setbacks and stay true to their values, even when it’s hard. It’s not about being fearless, it’s about acting even when they are afraid.
Parents can help build courage by praising effort, not just outcomes, and creating space for teens to try, fail and try again. Celebrate the small brave moments—raising a hand in class, standing up for a friend, going to a new club or asking for help. These moments build confidence and character that will carry them far beyond the school gates.
Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.’ —Mary Anne Radmacher
