ASC Rowers Win Medals in 8.6km Race
On Saturday 25 October, whilst most where just waking up for the weekend, several of our keen rowing squad put their names forward to compete in one of the longer races available in WA.
All Saints’ fielded two quads for the ANA Head of the Swan race. This saw athletes row from the ANA boatshed in Ascot to the start, 8.6km away in Guildford, and then begin the race back to the shed. For those trying to do the maths, ASC students rowed at least 17.2km, half of that under race conditions.
The Girls Coxed Quad – Year 10 students Leticia Avery (Cox) and Hayley Walker (stroke), Ophelia Goh (Year 9), Eleanor Burwood (Year 11) and Amalie Furchtenicht (Year 9) – rowed a well-thought-out and well-paced race in an unfamiliar boat. Facing some challenges with setup and moving parts older than what they were used to, the girls competed fiercely to earn medals with a time of 44.15.95.
The Mixed Coxed Quad – Year 9 student Charlie Huang (cox) and Year 10 students Nishaan Sunner (Stroke), Alicia Garvey, Connor Gee and Rosie Bennison – completed the distance at a frantic pace, overtaking several crews on their journey to a time of 37.24.93, a time that saw them walk away with the medals for the race. This time was also the fastest of its boat class on the day.
Congratulations to these athletes who not only represented the College with their usual professionalism but also faced challenging conditions, with wind and rain a role in a long day in the boat.
A special thanks to host club ANA Rowing Club, who generously allowed us to use two quads and sets of oars. Without their support, we would not have been able to compete in this event.
