Romeo and Juliet – Film Study
Students have been engaging with the modernised film adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic Romeo and Juliet.
To begin the unit, students completed a deep dive into the play’s context, themes, concerns and values.
They then carried out detailed scene analyses, examining not only key quotes and plot points, but also how director Baz Luhrmann uses camera techniques, mise en scene and sound effects to communicate ideas about responsibility, unchecked love, conflict, the impulsivity of youth and tragedy.
It has been wonderful to see students work together as we watch and analyse each scene, sparking thoughtful discussion and deepening their understanding of the text.
Students are now continuing their analysis as they prepare to write a formal text response essay.
Here are some of their reflections on the unit so far:
- “I have enjoyed exploring the story as we watch the film.”
- “I like how the modern version uses action and visuals to highlight the tragedy.”
- “I have enjoyed creating organised and detailed scene notes.”
- “Rewatching each scene has helped me analyse and understand the ideas of responsibility and tragedy more deeply.”
