A Year of Chinese

This year, students have been working on a mix of cultural and language units for Chinese.

The aim of these have been to build up students’ familiarity with reading and writing, building confidence with using Chinese outside of the classroom, while also expanding on the rich history and culture of China.

Year 7 students have worked on the foundations of Chinese, using coloured characters, games and class exercises to build these language skills.

They have developed their writing skills to form basic questions, statements and phrases, and have also refined their pronunciation of pinyin and tones. To understand more about China’s geography, the Year 7 students led their own inquiry task on a province of their choice.

The focus of Year 8 has been to broaden their knowledge about the history and ingenuity of China, primarily focusing on China’s major inventions and how they shaped the world. Diving deeper into the diversity of China, the Year 8 students learnt about its various cuisines and how different areas have their own unique culinary flavours and styles.

For language work, students have been working with complex grammar points to respond to extended reading passages and translate a range of sentences.

Working with the Year 7 and Year 8 students has been a joy, and I am so proud to see how they have improved through the year.

Well done! (非常好!)
