Inquiry Term 4
This term our students have been learning about Science, specifically biology.
Our Prep to Year Twos have explored what plants and animals need to survive; air, water, food and shelter. They have been learning to group them in different ways, based on classifications, habitats, food chain etc.
Our Year Three and Fours have explored living, non living and once living things and what makes them that way. They have classified animals based on: diet, where they are found in the world, habitats, life span, average size, weight, scientific name and physical characteristics. After the incursion, the students have further explored Australian animals. In the coming weeks they will learn about food chains, ecosystems and choose an animal to research for themselves.
Our Year Fives have explored habitats, diet, physical adaptations and relationships between animals. The focus has been on how animals have adapted over time to ensure their survival.
Our Year Sixes have explored habitats and the different adaptations animals make, including: structural and behavioural to survival in their environment. They have looked at the human impact on these animals survival and how we can make changes to assist in their ongoing survival.
Please ask your child/ren questions like:
- What animal do you find the most interesting and why?
- Why do you think a (name an animal) lives in a (habitat)?
- What are the differences between a (name one animal) and a (name another animal)?
- Why do you think a (animal) has (specific feature, like stripes or a long neck)?
- What do you think it feels like to (animal's activity, like fly or swim)?
- How do you think a (animal) feels when (describe a situation, like being hugged too tightly)?
These types of questions help them to think about what they have been learning and apply their knowledge with justifications.
