Year 1/2 News

Learning Centre One
We’ve had such an exciting couple of weeks filled with adventure, learning, and celebration!
Our Trip to Werribee Open Range Zoo
Last week, the 1/2s had a wonderful excursion to the Werribee Open Range Zoo. The children were thrilled to see so many amazing animals up close. The safari bus ride was a highlight—everyone loved spotting the animals roaming freely and learning about their habitats and how the zoo helps to protect endangered species. Thank you to all the parent helpers that took time out to help us with the excursion - days like theses can't happen without your support.
Multicultural Day
We celebrated Multicultural Day, and it was absolutely beautiful to see the children come dressed in clothing that represented so many different cultures and family backgrounds. We shared stories from around the world, and the children enjoyed learning about the diverse traditions that make our community so special. Thank you to all the families who contributed food, outfits, and stories—it made the day truly memorable.
1/2 Faith Night
A huge thank you to all the parents and families who joined us on Tuesday evening for our 1/2 Faith Night. It was a beautiful evening of reflection, storytelling, and creativity. The children were so proud to create their stained glass artwork together.
Literacy:
In Literacy, we are learning how to create information texts. Students have been working in small groups to read books about different animals, examining the pictures closely and gathering facts to share with the class. We are focusing on writing clear, factual sentences and including interesting details to teach our readers something new. To support their writing, students explored how nouns can be used to label parts of animals by studying a diagram of a tiger, noticing how labels and captions help readers understand information clearly.
We have some new members in LC1:
This week in LC1 the 1/2s students each got a Lacewing Butterfly Crysalis to look after and watch hatch and turn into a beautiful butterfly. The students are eagerly waiting for them to hatch and emerge - How long is this going to take? Ask your child about the adventures of the Lacewing Butterfly. The new memebers names are: Butternut, Golden, JJ, Crystal and Peach! Keep up to date on their progress on dojo as we wait for them to evolve into beautiful, butterflies!
Math:
In Maths, we have been learning to recognise and describe one-half as one of two equal parts of a whole. Students are connecting this understanding to quarters by exploring repeated halving. Through hands-on activities with counters, shapes and drawings, the children are developing a strong sense of equal parts and fractions in everyday contexts.
Religion:
In Religion, we are learning about Advent and its symbols and colours. The children are discovering that Advent is a time of waiting and preparation for the birth of Jesus. Together, we are making a class Advent wreath, exploring its symbols and what each candle represents — hope, peace, joy, and love. Students have also written their own Advent pledges, reflecting on what they would like to do more for others during this special season. These pledges remind us of the importance of kindness, generosity, and helping those in need as we prepare our hearts for Christmas.
Inquiry:
In Inquiry, we have been exploring living things and what they need to survive. Students can now explain what animals and plants need to stay healthy and alive. They are also learning to follow sequenced steps in scientific investigations to find out more about the world around them. To build on our recent visit to the Werribee Zoo, students will be choosing their favourite animal from the excursion and creating a booklet titled “My Zoo Animal Report.” This project will allow them to apply their research and writing skills while sharing interesting facts about their chosen animal.
Wellbeing:
Our Wellbeing focus this week has been on ways to be gender fair. We learned that being gender fair means treating girls and boys equally and kindly. It means everyone gets the same chances to play, learn, and help, no matter if they are a girl or a boy. Through learning group discussions and activities, students explored examples of fairness and inclusion, and reflected on how they can make sure everyone feels respected and valued both in the learning space and in the playground.
Reminders:
- Playground Use After School: The playground is not open after school during pickup time. Please remind your child to head straight to you and avoid playing on the equipment. Your support is greatly appreciated.
- Running to pick up bay: Can you please remind your child at the end of the day that we don't run to the pick up bay. Multiple times other parents and children have almost been bowled over. Your support in this is appreciated.
- iPads: Students are expected to bring their iPads fully charged each day, as they are an essential tool for learning.
- Brain Food: Students have a brain food break at 10:00 AM. Please pack a healthy snack such as fruit or vegetables for this time.
- No Hat, No Play - Just a reminder that we are now entering hat season. All students will require a hat for play and if they don't have a hat, students will be asked to play in the shade.
