Literacy

Welcome to the Literacy page of the OLSC newsletter. This week, take a look at what our Junior students are reading, writing and speaking about at the moment.

Prep Literacy

Our Prep students are currently participating in wonderful language experiences that will bolster their vocabulary and provide them with opportunities to try new things. They have been writing procedures and are reading and following sequential steps to cook and experiement with science.

Within their writing, the students are using nouns to name the ingredients and equipment needed, and verbs to begin the steps of the method. They have watched videos and read recipes to find out what the finished products should like like. The preps have been practising taking turns and using their listening skills to learn what to do next.

1/2 Literacy

During Literacy, the 1/2 students have been making connections to their Science Inquiry by researching and writing about animals. They have discussed the differences between a fictional story and an information text; including features like a contents pages, labelled diagrams, photos and scientific vocabulary. Every morning, students spend time reading short non-fiction texts about animals and their features, habitats, lifecycles and survival.

The students use the facts they have read about to write their own sentences about their chosen animals. They are practising creating noun groups when writing descriptive sentences about the physical features of the animal. The aim is for the students to produce an informative poster for their peers to read thereby learning new facts about many different creatures.
