Grade 5/6

Grade 5/6 have continued to display great perseverance while completing a number of summative assessments, in addition to their daily learning-- well done team! An absolute highlight of the past fortnight was the level of pride that our Grade 6 students led our whole-school Remembrance Day assembly with. As a class, we created poppy wreaths and practised running a respectful service. Thank you to our Vice School Captains, Acacia and Anakie, for running the assembly, and a special shout out to Jeanette and Ayden, for respectfully and confidently reading aloud The Ode and poem, 'In Flanders Fields'. We are incredibly proud of you all for leading our school in such an important commemorative event!

Senior students are eagerly awaiting their Grade Six Day Out coming up Friday 28th November! Thank you to all parents who have handed back in the consent and medical forms for this milestone event. We are incredibly excited to venture down the street and enjoy a trip to the local cinema, before returning to school for an afternoon of games, plenty of meals together and, of course, the much anticipated water fight! A friendly reminder that graduation is also coming up, on Thursday 4th December! Please remember to contact the office regarding payments. Students will begin working on their graduation speeches next week, which we are all extremely excited to hear!

In English, students have been recapping the effect of first person narration through providing written responses explaining the impact of stories being told from a character's perspective. The Grade 5/6s also extended themselves, creating an essay style response to a given prompt centred around our whole class text, Rivet Boy. Students then received some feedback, which they used to edit and add to their response. Well done to the students for up-levelling their work! Our school-wide Spelling Competition also saw two of our classmates receiving awards as their respective spelling level champion- Livana and Dom! Livana also won the overall 2026 spelling age competition, receiving a spelling age of 16 years old! A huge congratulations to Livana and all participants!

Within Mathematics, students have meticulously measured angles using protractors, as well as applied their knowledge of angles and their properties to solve problems. What an amazing job students did on their angle unit-- keep up the great work! We have also explored 3D shapes, their nets, identifying cross-sections of 3D shapes, and identifying right prisms. A highlight was actually creating cross-sections by slicing 3D shapes made of playdough! Of course, we then had to have a quick 5 minute playdough modelling time to wrap up the session! Make sure to check out some of the photos below.

In Humanities, students researched an influential Indigenous Australian who has significantly contributed to change and Australian society. Some absolutely brilliant posters were created, and everyone walked away with new facts to share. Within Science, more exciting experiments helped us explore mixtures as solutions or suspensions. Extra community-based activities, like bingo at The Grange and receiving donations from local businesses, continue to be a highlight for the students involved.
