This term, the Middles explored ‘How We Express Ourselves’, inquiring into how authors and illustrators communicate ideas through words and images. We began with a fun back-to-back drawing challenge, where students learned how tricky it can be to communicate clearly using only spoken words! Each class then focused on a different author study — Aaron Blabey, Shaun Tan, Graeme Base, and Oliver Jeffers — discovering how each creator’s life experiences shaped their stories and illustrations. Students analysed illustration styles, listened to author podcasts, and created their own inspired works to share across classes. To finish our unit, we were thrilled to welcome local author Julie Edmonds, who shared how her stories grow from first ideas into published books — the perfect way to celebrate our learning!
