iPads and Headphones
Grade 3 and 4 are commencing end of year assessments, please ensure your child has a set of headphones that are compatible with their iPad and bring them to school each day. Swimming
School swimming will be starting next week with the first session on (Monday 24th of November). Please send them with a plastic bag/wet bag for bathers and towels. Please also name all of their belongings, including socks and underwear.
Students will be moving across the globe and making comparisons between Victoria and countries in South America. Your child has been assigned a South American country to research in CBL. Students will be focusing on finding evidence through research and answering the prompt questions in their own words. We are highlighting the importance of summarising in their own words rather than copying information (plagiarising) from the internet.
What you could do to support your child
You could ask your child which country they have been allocated and discuss what they have learnt about the flag and emblem of the country. How is it different from the Australian flag and emblem? Encourage them to be curious and brainstorm more questions about their country that they want to explore next.
Students will be exploring a variety of narrative genres, including adventure, mystery, fantasy and realistic fiction. They will examine how authors develop engaging storylines by introducing problems and complications that build tension and keep the reader interested. Students will also study the ways writers use rich and descriptive vocabulary, figurative language, and sensory detail to create vivid imagery, evoke emotion, and bring characters and settings to life.
What you could do to support your child
Your child should be reading independently for a minimum of 20 minutes each evening. Please also encourage them to share, if they are reading non-fiction, they could share interesting new facts they have found. If they are reading fiction, they could share what they like about the author’s writing style and the genre (for example comedy, fantasy, adventure, historical fiction) of the text.
We will be revisiting narrative writing starting this week planning a narrative with a title provided. Students will be required to decide upon a genre to write in. They will begin by focusing on the introduction ensuring they have clear and descriptive characters and setting. Students will be working to create and engaging piece, written descriptively in their own author’s voice.
What you could do to support your child
Please discuss the narrative title with your child, what will the genre of the story be, what direction do they want to take the writing in? You can discuss possible character traits, setting, complications and resolution.
We are continuing our work on algebra focusing on number patterns and missing numbers. In our mass and capacity lessons we will continuing to use scales, measuring cups and containers to make comparisons and order from least to greatest capacity.
What you could do to support your child
Students are strongly encouraged to use Mathletics at home to continue to build confidence in applying skills taught at school. Additionally, connecting to their work on Algebra you may like to create patterns for your child to solve.
