Year 7 Girls Cricket Eastern Region Grand Finalists 2025

Representing Maroondah Division at Eastern Region as undefeated Premiers for the 35th consecutive year- the first three combining with Year 8. Our girls approached 30 October with a degree of confidence in their team make-up, but also with a sense of the unknown, as this was the first of those 35 years that we had progressed without having to play an opposing team.

The conditions at Macleay Park, Balwyn North, were favourable and our 9 players were most keen to play a match together for the first time in the Semi Final against Canterbury Girls SC. Being sent into bat, we accumulated 89 runs off the15 over innings. Major contributors were Liv H with 12 runs (2 fours) and Holly Y with 15 runs (1 four and 3 twos). Violet S also impressively hooked one to the square leg boundary.

At the change of innings, we believed that we were in quite a good position, as Canterbury would have to score exactly a run a ball to overtake us, and we were ready to support each other in our bowling and fielding. As it unfolded, all 9 team members did contribute most positively with the ball in hand or in the field (special mention to fielders Summer L and Ella K) and, with a comfortable victory, we were able to earn a place in the final. 5 bowlers skilfully captured wickets. Summer S: 3/5; Holly 3/5; Taya A 3/8; Violet 3/14 and Isla H 1/5. Koa C and Liv also bowled economically.

Norwood 5/89      Canterbury 13/50

The final saw us tackle Vermont, who had convincingly defeated Auburn SC in their Semi. From very early on, it was obvious that the Vermont girls were a formidable opponent. Although the Vermont batters were running well between the wickets and were keeping the score board ticking over, to our credit we were walking in with the bowler, encouraging each other and backing up in the field on all occasions. Vermont had averaged 7 an over after the first 4, but as Holly and Liv had already taken a wicket each, we knew we were in the contest. The skill of Vermont’s no 3 and no 4, though, steered them into a strong position. After 8 overs, our opposition was 2/75 and, although a wicket fell to Liv in the penultimate over, Vermont finished with an impressive 3/121.

Not to be deterred, we agreed that if we made certain improvements from the Semi, by calling early, backing up from the non-striker’s end and being more prepared to take quick singles, that it was possible to chase the down their total. An average of 8 per over was our aim. Although we found that target beyond our reach, it was really pleasing to witness all those improvements that we had set out to achieve. Our 7 batters all contributed to the total and did their very best, with our final batters, Isla and Coa, still focused by running a bye on the last ball of the match. Violet was our top scorer with 12 off the bat (the first ball that she faced was our single four for the innings.)

Vermont 3/121     Norwood 3/70

At the Presentation of the Premiership Pennant to Vermont and the Runners-Up Pennant to Norwood, Isla, on behalf of the team, spoke confidently and with clarity and certainly was a fine ambassador for the College.

Thanks to the coaching panel, Jassie F, Lottie W and Blake K (who also scored).

Thanks to Mrs Kear for supporting, cheering and providing the refreshing icy poles.

With some consistent practice together next year, we know it could be possible to go at least one step further.

Congratulations on being in the top 16 Year 7 girls cricket teams in Victoria!
