Exploring Wilam: Learning About Country, Language, and Living Things
Our Year 1 students have been diving into the beautiful book Wilam: A Birrarung Story, learning the Woiwurrung language while inquiring into ‘Sharing the planet’. Through this text, students discovered how humans, animals, and habitats are interconnected, and how our actions impact the Birrarung (Yarra River) and surrounding waterways such as Kooyongkoot (Gardiners Creek).
As part of their inquiry, students created their own Birrarung and Kooyongkoot landscapes, painted native animals, and reflected on actions they can personally take to care for living things, such as picking up rubbish and choosing bubbles instead of balloons to protect wildlife.
Year 1s will be designing a deck of animal cards, featuring local species, and using them to create their own games for their next inquiry unit. We look forward to seeing where their creativity and curiosity will take them next!
