School News Update

Message from Acting Principal Kate Nancarrow
Our principal Travis Paterson is currently on leave and will return on Monday 15 December, ready for an action packed final week of term. During this time, please feel free to contact the principal team, Rhian, Hayley or myself, if you require support.
We are looking forward to farwelling our Year 3s as they head off to camp next week and our students are busy rehearsing for the Footsteps Dance Concert.
We’re also excited to cheer on our Prep to Year 2 students during their Junior School Sports Day on Monday.
Wishing everyone a wonderful week ahead!
City 2 South
Thursday 6 October:
We started our training for City to South in early October, some days we did megalaps around the school. Other days, we walked to Anderson Park and did four to ten laps around it, including the challenging ‘heartbreak hill’. Closer to the big day, we started to run along the Yarra Trail to get more familiar with the track. We felt ourselves getting fitter and getting more used to running longer distances, if we weren’t already.
After lots of hard work and training, the City to South day finally came. We all left in different groups to board the train to the start of the trail, which was at the Botanical Gardens. We started running along the Yarra River with a beautiful view of Melbourne city.
At first, the run felt pretty easy, the track was perfectly flat and the weather was great. The first checkpoint came by really quickly, and then the second one. Even if some of us started to feel tired, we kept pushing on. The next part of the track was like a pattern, up onto a track down onto a bridge section right on the top of the river and at this point we all felt tired.
We soon spotted the landmark, the memorable gum tree at last, and then the third checkpoint. We refreshed with some water and a lolly, then continued down the familiar territory. Finally, the long red bridge that separated Scotch and St Kevins came upon us and we knew we were nearing the finish line. We ran and ran until we reached the traffic light and up Burgess Street. We sprinted through the balloon arch. We celebrated with victory and joy as we closed our eyes and felt proud of this achievement and held up our choc tops.

Policies in the Spotlight : Sun Protection
At Auburn South, we're serious about keeping our community safe from the sun. Our Sun Protection Policy supports staff and students to use a mix of sun-safe strategies when UV levels reach 3 or higher, including shade, clothing, hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
- We prioritise shading across our playgrounds, lunch areas, and outdoor lesson zones so students can stay protected.
- Our uniform is designed to help: it includes sun-protective clothing, and in Terms 1 & 4 all students are required to wear hats that protect the face, neck, and ears.
- We encourage everyone (students, staff, and visitors) to apply SPF 30+ sunscreen before going outside and reapply every two hours.
- Where practical, we also support wearing close-fitting, wrap-around sunglasses that meet Australian safety standards.
- Sun safety education is built into our curriculum, and we regularly remind our community via newsletters and school communications.
You can read the full policy on our school website.
