Middle Learning News

Hi Everyone,

We started the fortnight by welcoming the mischievous Bella and Oscar into our learning space for a visit!

We hope all Mums enjoyed their Mother’s Day picture books.

Leading up to this creation, students used alliteration to choose an interesting title.

Some examples included:

Amazing Mum Annette

Excellent Mum Emily

Super Selfless Mum Shauna

Kind Mum Kaye

Students brainstormed attributes of their mums; they then worked alongside Sam and myself to articulate sentences for each attribute.

Through reading activities, we explored imagery in texts by covering the words. Students made predictions based on the illustrations. They were able to identify the importance of the pictures in telling the story. Students were encouraged to take this learning into consideration when they designed the pictures in their book.

They spent an endless amount of time ensuring their best letter formation and detail in their pictures. The final pieces were impressive! It was lovely to see how proud the they were of their creations.

We hope this is something you can keep and cherish for many years to come.

Connection

This week we discovered, inquired and wondered based on our essential question,

How can we connect to Country to learn and grow?

We spent some time outside to spark some wonderings and knowledge with each other.

We also joined together with the 4/5/6 students. Some children paired up to create a podcast. Others designed their own map of a special place. Ruby and Ivy created an updated and improved version of Nagambie. At the end, we gathered together to reflect on the session.

Mathematics

We continue to use addition and subtraction to solve problems during mathematics sessions but we also explored some grids and mapping during inquiry. Students are learning mental strategies to help solve these problems in their minds. We continued to revise 10 facts and transferred them to help solve problems such as 53 and how many more to get to 60, 70, etc. Students identified addition and some subtraction fact families for numbers 4–15. They also added and subtracted ten from numbers without relying on counting individually. You may like to practise some of these strategies at home. Some students are working on adding and subtracting two digit numbers in their mind using various strategies.

Focus Student

We have launched a new and exciting activity in our classroom as a way to acknowledge different strengths and interests. Each week, a focus student is picked out.

This chosen student is welcomed to share a special belonging from home through show-and-tell. They are also encouraged to bring in their favourite book to read.

This student also has the ability to pick an activity for the class to participate in.

Our first lucky student to be picked was Mahveen.

Mahveen chose to have a session completing puzzles and making an animal craft.

Everyone enjoyed this time! Each focus student will be drawn out at the beginning of the week.

We have loved the sunny days and eating together on the picnic rug!

Have a beautiful weekend.
