What's Happening in the F/1 Classroom?
This week in Literacy we have been focussing on the /f/ sound. The students have enjoyed finding this sound while reading, discovering more and more words with the sound each day.
How many /f/ words can you find in the picture below?
Our tasks have been based around practicing the /f/ sound, building and decoding simple words and our letter formation and fine motor skills.
Counting On Mastery:
Our students have dedicated themselves to mastering the skill of counting on from any given point. Through targeted exercises and interactive games, they've embraced the challenge of continuing number sequences with precision and confidence. Whether it's counting on from a single-digit or a two-digit number, they've shown remarkable progress in this fundamental skill.
1 to 20 Exploration Extravaganza:
This week has been all about diving deep into the numbers 1 through 20. The students have engaged in a variety of activities, from tracing and writing each digit to identifying them in real-world scenarios. Through hands-on practice and visual aids, such as number charts and manipulatives, they've solidified their understanding of these foundational numbers.
Unveiling the Power of Number Charts and Lines:
With the introduction of number charts and lines, our students have unlocked new avenues for numerical exploration. They've eagerly utilised these tools to visualize number sequences, identify patterns, and make connections between different numerical representations. From plotting numbers on a number line to filling in missing numbers on a chart, they've embraced these visual aids as indispensable companions in their mathematical journey.
Hands-On Practice Galore:
In our classrooms, learning comes alive through hands-on exploration. Students have been actively engaged in using manipulatives, such as counting blocks and number cards, to reinforce their counting skills. Whether it's arranging counters on a ten-frame or hopping along a number line, they've enthusiastically embraced every opportunity to make learning tangible and interactive.
How lucky are we! Our students had a special visit from Lavinia and the ambulance, offering a unique glimpse into our community's diverse skills. Lavinia's presence emphasised the importance of connecting with emergency services and understanding their vital role in keeping us safe.
Through this visit, students practiced calling 000 and gained an understanding of what questions they may be asked when they are on the phone to 000. They discussed water safety, and the importance of never swimming alone, they practiced CPR, got to explore the ambulance and asked Lavinia lots of questions.
It was a valuable lesson in unity and collaboration within our community, showcasing how we can rely on each other in times of need. We also wrote thank you letters to the paramedics, reflecting on how lucky we are to have emergency services.
We also had a visit from the police, sparking excitement and insightful discussions among students. From examining police equipment to stepping inside a patrol car, students gained firsthand insight into law enforcement tools and technology.
The visit wasn't just about gadgets; students also delved into the requirements and qualities needed to become a police officer. However, the visit's most crucial message was on the importance of seeking help from the police when needed. Officers emphasised the role they play in ensuring community safety and encouraged students to reach out in emergencies.
You will notice there have been some additions to the reader bags this week. Each student has been given some letters to practice while they are at home. Students are encouraged to practice identifying the letters and their corresponding sounds. We have also supplied a numeracy activity that the children can access through out the week to assist them with their numeracy skills. The activities are hands on activities that the whole family can participate in. We have also created a Spotify playlist of song that you can play to your child that will help with the teaching in the class room. Please see the link belo to access the playlist.
