Reading: The Good News

According to a Deakin University study, "One-third of Secondary school students do not read at all during their free time, while 13 per cent of students in Year 4 never or almost never borrow books from a library."

This makes for interesting reading. I don’t believe that this reflects our school because we build reading into our Primary Years program, and in the Secondary School, the English program provides time for reading and models reading to the students.

Our school library has passionate staff. In fact, both libraries have had a makeover of their look as well as their collections in the past year and the students have responded well to the changes. Borrowing levels are up.

Most recently the library has launched eAudiobooks for students with reading difficulties. The focus is on the class novel, but there is also a fabulous collection of books at each year level.

What you can do is to ensure that your child reads every night. It is a wonderful habit to read before bed. It helps settle the mind ready for sleep and incrementally builds towards a lifelong reading habit.

Helping Make our School a Better Place

Hi and Hello from the Facilities Support Department. Welcome to term two for 2024.

Whilst the students were on break, we were busy tidying, repairing, and beautifying the school for the students’ return.

As we are now into autumn, we are preparing for a spectacular change of season which poses a challenge for our grounds staff and cleaning team.

To help aid our efforts in keeping the playground free from debris and leaves, work was carried out on the garden beds near the canteen, art rooms and junior playground area. The mulch and stone that provided ground cover in these areas was replaced with artificial turf making it a much more aesthetically pleasing environment.

I am pleased to see this has proven to be popular with the students as they are flocking to these areas at lunch and recess, giving them an opportunity to enjoy it as a community meeting place and a comfortable area to eat their lunch as the school grows.

The word from the students when quizzed about the new gardens was a unanimous “WE LOVE IT”.

Anzac Parade

On 24 April, the College held Primary and Secondary Anzac Parades where students and staff could pay their respects and take a moment of remembrance. Lest We Forget.

Thank you to all the students and staff who contributed to the event.
