Welcome back Year 6 families, we hope you enjoyed your holidays! We are so excited to have our Year 6 students back in the classroom ready to learn.
Our literacy classes have been busy! Students have been learning how to make informative paragraphs shine using the Single Paragraph Outline (SPO) structure. Now, we're diving into ANZAC Day!
ANZAC Day is a very important in Australia and New Zealand. It's a time to remember the brave soldiers who fought in World War I. Our students are learning all about it, from its history to why it's still important today.
We're writing lots of paragraphs about ANZAC Day. Students are getting really good at organising their ideas and writing clearly. It's exciting to see them grow as writers.
Some students have started the Stories in the Wall program. This program is run by people from the Arts Centre Melbourne. Stories in the Walls runs every Tuesday morning. So far students have been placed in groups of five and have brainstormed ideas on what their audio play narrative could be about.
We're diving into the world of economics! Our students are learning about what communities need versus what they want. We've been studying how entrepreneurs help meet these needs. By looking at real-life examples, we're seeing how creative thinkers make things better for everyone.
Our students are now figuring out ways they can help their own community. Stay tuned for more updates on their exciting learning!
We're excited to update you on our numeracy lessons. Here's what's been happening:
In class, students are learning division with remainders and how to express them as fractions. They're also getting skilled at reading different types of graphs, like bar graphs and pie charts, and comparing data sets. In addition to our regular lessons, we've implemented daily Mental Math. This quick exercise helps students sharpen their numeracy skills and improve their fluency.
Furthermore, our daily review questions have been incredibly effective and engaging. These questions not only reinforce concepts learned in class but also encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students eagerly anticipate these challenges and enthusiastically participate in discussions. We're proud of their progress and enthusiasm!
In our recent SEL sessions, students have been discovering new ways to be mindful using their senses. From focusing on their breath to noticing the sights and sounds around them, they're learning simple strategies to stay present and calm. By exploring how their senses can help them relax and stay focused, students are finding practical ways to bring mindfulness into their everyday lives.
Students have been busy learning how to talk about farm animals using Australian Sign Language (Auslan). With fun activities and practice, students have gotten really good at describing sheep, cows, and chickens with their hands and faces.
