In Knowledge, we have started to learn about our new topic, Ancient Rome. We started this learning by investigating a world map and its features, such as the equator and the compass. We discussed the difference between countries and continents and what the 7 continents are. Our learning then moved into learning about the Mediterranean regions and seas on a map. An interesting fact that we learned about Rome is that the country is shaped like a boot! We have learned about ancient Roman gods and goddesses and stories which were told, the Roman republic and learnt new words to add to our vocabulary, such as province, republic and peninsula. In the weeks to come, we will learn more about the Ancient Roman times and deepen our knowledge.
We have jumped straight back into Writing this term with a focus on writing Procedural Texts. We have learned that a Procedural Text provides a reader with a set of instructions on how to do or make something, and includes four main sections: a Title, Materials, Ingredients and Method section. We were very excited about making ANZAC Biscuits during the second week of Term 2, and then to use our knowledge of Procedural Texts to write a set of instructions about our baking experience. We have also loved including transitional words into our pieces of writing to help them ‘flow’, and making sure that we are writing our verbs in their correct tense. In the coming weeks, we are looking forward to continuing to practise our writing skills by integrating our knowledge of Ancient Rome into our lessons.
In Numeracy we focused on telling time to the minute. Students read analogue clocks to work out the time and made times to the minute using mini clocks. We are now focusing on measurement. This week students will learn how to measure the length of various objects accurately using a ruler. We will then work on comparing and ordering objects by their length. Students have also learnt about location and will have a go at creating directions.
We have also been exploring different ways to solve addition and subtraction problems. This week we focused on using number lines to solve equations. We have revised the way we use number lines and how we partition numbers to assist in using this strategy.
