Year 2 - Term 2, April 2024

Literacy

This term, we will begin with a review on previously taught Stage 4-Stage 7.1 Little Learners Love Literacy phonemes and graphemes. We will then progress to learning Stage 7.2 phonemes and graphemes. Students will be taught alternate phonemes (example: /ore/, /our/, /au/, /al/) as well as continue to explore prefixes/suffixes and homophones.

While we continue to review nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives this term, we are also learning how to convert phrases to sentences. Students will learn to identify proper and common nouns and pronouns as well as compare sentence types (e.g. statements, questions, exclamations).

For knowledge, we are kicking off this term with our Insect knowledge unit where students will learn interesting facts about insects such as their body parts, life cycles and habitats.

Numeracy

We have begun practising mental maths daily using the New Waves books.

Some key focuses this term are:

  • Statistics and data - Students will learn how to collect and sort data in different ways such as using tally marks and picture graphs.
  • Addition and subtraction - Students will use different strategies including regrouping, base 10 blocks, vertical algorithm, number line and bar model.
  • Units of measurement - Students will learn how to estimate and measure the length, mass and capacity of various items.

SEL & Auslan

For SEL, we will continue with The Resilience Project where students learn how to demonstrate gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. In addition, we hope to teach our students how to be emotionally literate, which is to be able to correctly identify and label their emotions so they can, in turn, recognise and be sensitive to the emotions of others.

This term we are continuing to learn about how people communicate using the Auslan Language. We will also learn a range of signs to express feelings, greetings, questions, house items, sea animals, days and months, numbers and the weather. Students may like to share with you the signs that they learned in Term 1.
